3. University of Minnesota Duluth  The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a comprehensive regional university  UMD's campus consists of more than 50 buildings on 244 acres overlooking Lake Superior  UMD's fall 2010 enrollment was 11,730, and over 1,995 people work at UMD

4. Energy and UMD  UMD was recently recognized in Princeton Review's Guide to 311 Green Colleges  Four LEED-certified buildings on campus, including the Bagley Outdoor Classroom  Several smaller rain garden and biofiltration areas, two green roofs, and many alternative plantings that replace maintenance-intensive sod  Signatory of ACUPCC  UMD Energy Action Plan

5. Energy and UMD  Electricity and energy use account for 90% of the university's carbon footprint  Even with a 40% increase in the size of our campus, efficiencies have helped UMD to avoid adding extra boilers in our heating plant

6. Energy and UMD  Facilities Management staff have replaced lighting, installed occupancy sensors and light-detection systems, and upgraded HVAC systems  Energy efficiency work has brought in over $458,000 in rebates from Minnesota Power since 2002

7. Office of Sustainability  The Office of Sustainability was established in Fall 2008 to communicate, coordinate, and assess sustainability efforts on the UMD campus  The Office of Sustainability and the UMD campus are committed to communicating, educating, and inspiring action to integrate sustainability into all aspects of campus life

8. Energy Conservation Member Responsibilities  Research, create, implement, and coordinate energy conservation and education programs on campus  Conduct public relations outreach through advertisements, brochures, and presentations  Administer energy assessments for campus students, staff, and faculty members

9. UMD Energy Pledge  I pledge to join my fellow students, staff, and faculty by taking the following actions to help save energy at UMD:  Enable energy saving settings on my computer to turn it off or 'sleep' when not in use  Turn off lights when leaving a room  Avoid the use of space heaters and personal fans  Use automatic door openers only when necessary  Put recyclable items in the proper bins instead of the trash  Buy products with reduced packaging or high recycled content packaging  Walk, bike, ride the bus, or carpool to school  Rely on natural lighting when possible and/or use compact fluorescent lights  Take the stairs instead of the elevator  Unplug equipment, appliances, and gadget chargers when not in use, or turn off a power strip  Over 300 additional signatures since September 2010

Fall 2010 Sustainability Fair  Sustainability: The New Business As Usual  Featured guest speaker Chris Paine  Director of WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? and REVENGE OF THE ELECTRIC CAR  Featured local businesses and organizations sharing how they incorporate sustainably into their operations  Sustainability panels:  Sustainability in Local Businesses  What Sustainability Means for the UMD Campus’ Bottom Line

11. Foot Warmer Pilot Program  Purpose:  To encourage people to switch to a more sustainable alternative  Electric foot warming mats  Participants must have used a space heater in their work space  Participants agreed to give up their space heater for the pilot program period  Results:  82% of respondents said that they were at least satisfied or extremely satisfied with the performance of their foot warming mat  100% said that they would be willing to participate in similar energy conservation programs in the future

12. UMACS Campus Energy Challenge  Goal:  To decrease UMD’s heat and electricity usage during the month of February 2011, compare the amount to previous years, and compete against other UMACS schools in the region for the greatest reductions  Provided an opportunity to promote energy conservation through posters, emails, and an appearance on the KUMD morning show

Spring 2011 Sustainability Fair  The Most Important Story Since Journalism Began: Global Climate Change  Featured guest speaker Don Shelby  Award-winning journalist and former WCCO news anchor  Featured student project presentations, organizations, and local businesses tabling  Sustainability panels:  Sustainability and Stewardship of Mineral Resources in Minnesota  Biogeologic Carbon Sequestration - A Cost-Effective Proposal  The UMD Energy Action Plan  Climate Change Facts  E-Waste Round-Up

14. Residence Dining Center LED Project  37 lighting fixtures in UMD's Residence Dining Center were retrofitted to use LED bulbs  The LED bulbs use over 75% less electricity than the lights that were there before  Results in an estimated $330 savings in electricity costs per year  LED retrofits are expected to pay for themselves in electricity savings in roughly 2 years and 9 months' time  The LED retrofits reduce UMD's carbon footprint by 7,800 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent per year

15. UMD Refrigerator Roundup  Purpose:  To save energy by replacing older, energy-intensive refrigerators, freezers, or coolers on campus with newer, more efficient models  The Office of Sustainability provides funding for up to 50% of the cost of a new, reliable Energy Star refrigerator for lab or research space  A limited amount of funding (around $25,000) was made available from the UMD Green Revolving Fund to help in the cost of replacing older equipment

16. Housing and Residence Life Sustainable Living Guides  To be distributed to all 4,000 on-campus residents in Fall 2011
