Sustainability Advocates Program New Advocates Training April 7, 2009 ENERGY AT NYU

www.nyu.edu/sustainability NYU Energy Use 150,000,000 kWh of electricity 4,000,000 gallons of fuel oil 8,800,000 therms of natural gas 80,000 mlbs of steam Virtually all of NYU’s carbon footprint is building energy use NYU produces about 0.3% of New York City’s carbon output. “Across the world, the realities of global warming are pressing hard against political and policy decisions; it is an enlightened and courageous elected leader who chooses to make the difficult decision of setting an agenda to confront directly the challenges of global warming.” --John Sexton, PlaNYC Challenge, June 6, 2007

Top electricity users in large buildings

www.nyu.edu/sustainability Energy: Conservation vs. efficiency NYU uses both “conservation” and “efficiency” “Conservation”: avoiding using energy Thermostat setpoints: $500,000/degree F temp. raised Computer power management & “Phantom Loads”: $750,000/year on turned-off devices “Efficiency”: doing the same thing with less energy CFL replacements save over $100/bulb installed, with same light output

www.nyu.edu/sustainability Setting the thermostat

www.nyu.edu/sustainability Energy actions: Conservation 2,500 occupancy sensors in offices/classrooms Vending Misers on beverage machines Heating/cooling occupancy sensors in about 1500 dorm rooms Staff and student computer hibernation settings Working with custodial staff to ensure lights off after cleaning Building schedules Examining temperature setpoints

www.nyu.edu/sustainability Energy actions: Efficiency 13,000 CFLs installed in fixtures 12,000 CFLs distributed to incoming students Lighting audits or retrofits in over 4,000,000 occupied square feet Boiler controls for better performance in “shoulder” months Recommisioning/retrocommissioning Energy Star equipment; premium efficiency motors (NYSERDA)

www.nyu.edu/sustainability Energy savings: beyond electricity Boiler controls for higher efficiency Recommisioning/ retrocommissioning Domestic hot water retrofits in buildings using fuel oil in summer Third North kitchen renovation Heating controls in student rooms Exploration of LEED in some new projects

www.nyu.edu/sustainability What can Advocates do? Call Client Services Center at x81001 with hot/cold calls Use fans; avoid space heaters Set computers to “hibernate” when not in use Turn off lights when leaving office Turn off “Phantom Loads” (copiers, printers, etc.) at night and on weekends Natural lighting/daylighting Consider a laptop and docking station instead of a desktop Buy Energy Star rated equipment Replace incandescents with CFLs
