1 SATS information 2015

2 What does SATs stand for and what’s the purpose? Standard assessment test. For school- to internally assess progress made across Key stages. Secondary schools- to use as one of the tools for assessing pupils’ current levels of achievement. LA- to assess the performance of the school. Nationally- to assess the performance of the school in relation to similar schools.

3 Papers children will be taking at Level 3-5… Reading Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Maths (Writing-teacher assessed and moderated)

4 Changes from previous years… Reading - No specified reading time (total test is 1 hour). Three unrelated texts which are progressively more difficult. Maths- Two non-calculator papers. SPAG- No changes but still quite new.

5 Level 6 papers… Reading- 1 paper SPAG- 1 paper Maths- non-calculator and calculator paper

6 Important dates…11 th – 14 th May Monday 11 th May-Level 3-5 reading test and level 6 reading test Tuesday 12 th May Level 3-5 SPAG and level 6 SPAG Wednesday 13 th May Level 3-5 mental maths and level 3-5 Maths paper 1 (NO level 6 tests) Thursday 14 th May Level 3-5 maths paper 2, Maths level 6 paper 1 and paper 2

7 School preparation….. Spring 2015 1.Children will be covering all aspects of the curriculum to prepare for the tests. 2.Occasional past papers to enable them to become familiar with the style and structure of the tests. 3.Mental maths and reading preparation, a greater emphasis on teaching grammar in weekly lessons. 4.Weekly homework.

8 What you can do to help now… Support your child with their homework. Actively encourage your child to learn their multiplication facts. Use websites such as KS2 bite size revision. Encourage your child to speak in a grammatically correct way. Try to broaden your child’s vocabulary and encourage them to use a thesaurus and dictionary.

9 How to help during SATS week… Ensure your child has: a good night’s sleep a proper breakfast Also… allow them to relax in the evening without doing chores! encourage them to try their hardest and do their best don’t worry as we’ll be looking after them!
