14 Nutrient Numeric Criteria 1998 – EPA determine that all states w/ nutrient pollution would adopt NNCs 2008 – Clean Water Act Lawsuit filed 2009 – EPA Settlement 2012 – DEP provided EPA with weaker version of NNCs 2012 – Ball is in EPA’s court

15 GP Pipeline 2002 – Judge Order 2012 – Construction of the pipeline is underway 2012 – Currently negotiating with DEP to hold GP accountable to the most protective standards

16 Water Withdrawals 2012 – SJRWMD -$3.2 million Water Supply Impact Study The National Resource Council agrees that many more questions must be answered This study does not provide a green light to withdraw additional water from the St. Johns River.

17 Silver Springs Under Threat Springs provide 20-30% of the freshwater flow to the St. Johns River Healthy Springs = Healthy River Ranch Owner requesting 13.6 mgd More water than the City of Ocala Water Conservation = Top Priority

18 Conservation Land at Risk SJRWMD conducted an assessment of publically- owned land Over 600,000 acres preserved to protect our water resources Appetite to sell these protective lands Decision to be made in December 2012

19 What can you do? River Friendly Practices Build a Rain Barrel Maintain your septic tank Volunteer! River Patrol, events, education program, etc. Get to know your river Use your voice & vote! Ask candidates if they support a clean healthy St. Johns River!
