4 Time Commitment One year commitment to the program Attend trainings Mentor Benefits Leadership skills and a paid part-time position Opportunity to get to know other students and professionals on campus

5 Mentor Responsibilities Campus involvement Provide insight on being a successful student Develop leadership skills Attend orientation and monthly meetings Maintain weekly contact with protégés Act as a guide and “voice of experience” for protégés

6 Communication with Protégés You may meet with your protégés without any preconceived plans and let the protégés concerns/interests/etc. shape your communication. You may also consider possible topics of conversation or select material to use during your sessions with preparation in advance. Whether you plan carefully or respond spontaneously, it is helpful to be familiar with possible activities that you can use during your sessions with your protégés.

7 Some activities… Work on skills the protégé would like to improve Discuss a current event from a newspaper or magazine article Share cultural traditions Find mutual interests to share Help your protégés develop decision making skills Share the discovery of five new words a week Assist your protégés in organizing school work and developing study schedules ***Please keep documentation of your communication with your protégés. You must keep a record of meetings***
