The missing element causes it to be an incomplete thought A run-on sentence-- result of two sentences run together without adequate punctuation or a connecting word A comma splice ---sophisticated kind of run-on sentence in which two sentences are connected (“spliced”) with only a comma (a comma is not strong enough to connect two independent clauses; a period, semicolon, or conjunction is needed)
