2 Age Restrictions You must be at least age 18 to obtain an Illinois driver’s license. The following exceptions apply: If you are 16 or 17 years old and have successfully completed a state-approved driver education course

3 Age Restrictions In order to pass a state-approved driver education class a student must successfully complete the following Pass written, vision and driving exams Pass classroom and behind the wheel driving in state-approved driver education program Complete 50 hours of practice driving Parent needs to accompany student when getting license

4 Age Restrictions 50 hours of driving must be completed Parent Legal Guardian Responsible adult 21 years of age, had driver’s license for one year and approved by parents

5 Additional Requirements Drivers are required to carry your driver’s license or permit with you when you drive

6 Exemptions You may drive in Illinois without a valid driver’s license under the following circumstances Moved to Illinois from another state (90 days) Visiting Illinois from another state and own a driver’s license from that state Out-of-state student and have a driver’s license from that state Active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and have a valid drivers license in your home state

7 Exemptions Where you may drive in Illinois without a valid drivers license (Continued) Employed by the U.S. Government and have a valid driver’s license in your home state Operating farm machinery on a roadway between farm and near by farmland

8 Changing Your Name/Address Change Name A person has 30 days to legally change your name Address Change A person has 10 days to change your address These changes can be done at your local driver’s services facility

9 Document/Identification Requirements To receive an Illinois driver’s license/ID card you must provide acceptable forms of identification to prove the following: Legal Name Date of Birth Social Security number Residency Signature

10 Document/Identification Requirements Students will have to provide the following Parent Birth Certificate (Original Court House) Social Security Card (Original)

11 Document/Identification Requirements In addition to the identification requirements, students will provide: Current White Slip 50 hours driving sheet completed Completed road test

12 Driver’s License Classifications Drivers seeking a basic license to operate a car in Illinois are issued a Class D license Class D Any motor vehicle weighing 16,000 pounds or less

13 Driver’s License Renewal 90 days before your driver’s license expires, you should receive a renewal notice from the Secretary of States Office

14 Driver’s License Renewal A driver’s license is valid for four years and expires on the driver’s birthday except: Driver under age 21 – License expires three months after 21 st birthday Driver age 81-86 – License valid for two years Driver age 87 and older – License requires annual renewal

15 Driver’s License Renewal Standard Renewal Visit Driver Services facility and present your renewal notice Take appropriate exams Pay appropriate fee and have a new photo taken

16 Driver’s License Renewal Safe Driver Renewal Allows drivers with clean driving records to renew their driver’s license from home and visit a Driver Services facility only once every eight years May renew by online, phone or mail

17 Driver’s License Renewal Safe Driver Renewal “Continued” To be eligible: Be age 22-74 Not hold a CDL “Commercial Driver’s License Have no traffic infractions Renewal sticker will be mailed within 10 business days of application

18 Medical Report When you apply for a driver’s license, you will be asked about any physical or mental conditions that may impair your ability to drive a vehicle A “yes” answer to the above questions will require you to provide a medical report completed by your doctor
