3 STAR Collaborative Environment (CE) Centralized computing facility Elements –Network Attached Storage (NAS) ~300 TB planned –Linux servers, blades, possibly clustered or gridded –IBM AIX server(s) –Storage Area Network (SAN) –Other? –Configuration Management (HW and SW) General oversight via the STAR IT Advisory Committee. Gathering processing requirements Data Management in conjunction with the STAR Data Management Committee NAS generally for large, often-needed data sets. 5 Other IT Items Recent Accomplishments –Network Consolidation (security, DMZ, remote access) –Microsoft System Management Server implemented for Windows patching –Backup Exec implemented for Windows backup –Some 100 Mbit switches replaced with Gbit switches –Two new poster printers installed Moving toward Desktop Notebooks –Gradually replacing Windows desktops with notebooks plus docking stations, external monitor, keyboard, mouse –Reduces our inventory of Windows computers (one per person), thus easing administration –Eliminates need to sync your desktop and notebook files –Facilitates travel –Facilitates telecommuting –Facilitates disaster planning –Challenge: Keeping SW patched and up to date, especially security –Currently allocating and installing 40 new notebooks Moving toward centralized compute servers (mostly Linux) –No “extra” computers allowed in NCWCP offices/cubicles (heat, noise, power, space) –All compute servers headed to the data center racks –CE Other Activities –Investigating personal firewalls for Windows –Investigating anti-spyware for Windows –Update all Red Hat to version 4 –Etc.
