1 World Health Organization Non-communicable disease prevention and control: key messages 1.Non-communicable diseases are a major public health and socio- economic problem. –2/5 deaths in South Africa –loss of productivity, harmful use of alcohol alone (10-12% GDP) 2.“Dying too young:” 80% of premature mortality occurs in low and middle-income countries. 3.Public policies and health systems interventions exist to prevent premature deaths from non communicable diseases. 4.Prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases are becoming a part of the global development agenda, including post 2015 agenda. 5.UN Global Coordination Mechanism established to move forward the NCD agenda.
