Surprise, Surprise! Peel back the wrapper and whose image would you see?

By permission of ILRF.

Facts Cote d’Ivoire is a country in the west of Africa which produces more than 35% of the world’s cocoa crop. 1.8 million children work in the cocoa sector in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana. 400,000 of these children are under 12. In 2001 reports confirmed widespread child labour on cocoa farms Cote d’Ivoire and thousands of children being trafficked from nearby Mali and Burkina Faso.

Facts The conditions these children were working in were characterised as dangerous and they were forced to work long hours. In both Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana approximately 80% of children working in cocoa report carrying heavy loads. Approximately 50% of children working on cocoa farms in these countries reported exposure to injury including wounds and cuts, insect bites, and muscle pains.

On the very first day, he [farmer] took our luggage and locked it away. He ordered us to move heavy sacks of cocoa. They were so heavy I could barely lift it. [One boy] could not lift his sacks. The owner took a branch off a tree and started whipping him. He beat him until all his body was covered in cuts and blood. At that moment, I know he would beat us, too...(Sylla, 15 year old boy) We have never tasted chocolate... our bosses [farmers] never tasted chocolate...we work hard to pick the [cocoa] beans in the hot suns for 12 hours...no breaks... if we sit...we are dead... :Save The Children report 2005

The Harkin Engel Protocol In 2001 the chocolate industry signed an agreement saying they would guarantee the end of trafficked labour in the cocoa industry by 2005. They have failed to do this. They said they would cover half the farms in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire by 2008, but even this did not make sure all farms are free from using trafficked children. They said it was too difficult.

STOP THE TRAFFIK Chocolate Campaign Goals The customers need to know who picked the cocoa beans that makes their chocolate. The retailer needs to know that their customers will change what they buy to force the chocolate industry to change their practices. The chocolate manufacturers need to: KEEP THEIR ORIGINAL PROMISES GIVE US TRAFFIK FREE CHOCOLATE NOW

Only 0.0075% of this has been invested into improving working conditions in West Africa. This is not good enough.
