CommunicatingMakingEvaluating 7abc7abc Uses a good level of communication with colour and dimensional accuracy. A broad range of appropriate materials and techniques is used to good effect. Enough information is given to allow to proceed. Can explain details with annotation and speech. Can design with ProDesktop without assistance. Can confidently measure, mark out, cut precisely and combine ingredients using a range of equipment & processes. Can modify work to ensure good quality outcome. Quality control used. Consistency in quantity manufacture maintained. Can use CAM with confidence without assistance. Considerable critical judgements made based on appropriate testing against specification. Can suggest a number of workable improvements to both product and process. 6abc6abc Can sketch with confidence and use formal drawing. Can model in order to test out ideas. Can explain details with annotation and speech. Can use ProDesktop with some assistance. Can measure, mark out, cut precisely and combine ingredients using a range of equipment & processes with confidence. Uses checking procedures and changes work as needed. Finishes are good and appropriate. Uses CAM confidently. Can evaluate against specification by using simple testing methods and review working methods. Can suggest at least 4 improvements to both product and process. 5abc5abc Can sketch, use simple formal drawing & model designs, using clear annotation. Can use Techsoft 2D Design with confidence. Can measure, mark out, cut accurately and combine ingredients with confidence. Can use checking procedures and change work as needed. Can use CAM with guidance. Can evaluate product against specification. Can suggest at least 3 improvements to both product and process. 4abc4abc Can sketch and/or model their designs clearly with detailed labelling. Can measure/mark out and cut simple forms or combine ingredients using a variety of materials. Can use a range of joining methods. Is quite accurate & pays attention to finish and how it works. Can use CAM under supervision. Continuous process of evaluation. Makes simple reference to design brief/specification. Can suggest at least one improvement. 3abc3abc Can sketch and label their designs, showing some detail. Can use a small range of tools and produce quite accurate work which has been finished suitably. Products are similar to original plans. Can express ideas about what is successful and what is not successful about end product. 4 Contents Page: Situation/Design brief Specifications Research (natural structures) Research (man made structures) Research (forces) Research (bridge design) Generating and developing ideas Making Evaluation Evaluation and testing

Situation and Design Brief Situation: The government of Jakarta has asked a local construction company to build a bridge than will span a small river in East Java. This bridge will need to support cars, lorries and pedestrians and it will shorten the traveling time between the two villages on opposite sides of the river. They have commissioned 5 teams of engineers to design a scale model that will then be made full size. These teams will be competing for the contract and the strongest design will win the design contract. Design Brief Working in teams of 4 or 5, design and make a model bridge using only: Wooden skewers (x 50 per group) card for decking (90cm x 10cm x 2mm) x 2 String Hot glue The bridge should be no more than 10cm wide, 50 cm long and 60cm high. Some parts of the bridge can hang below the road surface level, but cannot be fixed to the sides You do not have to use all of the material provided. The winning design will be the strongest bridge. Note : There is no restriction on your actual design, but it should incorporate the best features of truss/beam, suspension, arched and cantilever bridges that you have researched.

Specifications Your bridge should : be as strong as possible be as light as possible be as rigid as possible be no more than 10cm wide be no more than 60 cm long be no more than 70cm high incorporate skewers in some part of the construction be based on your own original design (decided as a team) be finished to a high quality

Research: Natural structures In the space below, paste some images of FOUR natural structures. Anthills Stalactites & Stalagmites Formed by many years of erosion of limestone by water. Definition: A structure which is built due to natural causes, and not built by man.

Research: Man-made structures In the space below, paste some images of FOUR man made structures. Big Ben Largest clock in the world. Statue of Liberty Definition: A structure that is built by humans. Palm Island Eiffel tower

Forces In the space below, use simple diagrams to explain the difference between the following types of force. CompressionBending TorsionTension Pulling something tight. Compressing one side, and stretching the opposite side. Pulling something tight.

Research: Bridges Beam Bridge Location What is a Beam bridge? Suspension Bridge Location What is a Suspension bridge?

Research: Bridges On the next two pages, paste some images of bridges that you particularly like, that you have used for inspiration for your own design. If possible identify the name of the bridge and its location. Arch Bridge Location What is an Arch bridge? Truss Bridge Location What is a Truss bridge?

Design Ideas In the space below, paste some simple sketches or CAD drawings that you used when planning your bridge design. These can be part or complete drawings that identify particular features that you want your bridge to have. This is my final design. It’s a Truss bridge drawn full size so I can use it as a template

Make On the next two pages, paste some photographs that illustrate the stages that you went through as you were making your model bridge. Alongside each image, explain what was taking place. I drew a template of my bridge design showing triangulation. It is full size so it fits the span. 1 2 I selected Art straws and marked them for length against my template The straws were positioned on Low-Tac tape so they didn’t move I used a Hot glue gun to secure the joints when they were all in place

Make My finished Truss bridge Detail of a glued joint A finished side. I need 2 of these This is my Base. It is a Standard Component which means it was produced to a set or given design so they are all the same.

Evaluation In the space below describe how you made your bridge and what roles people had in your group In a space below, explain the benefits of working on a team project

Evaluation & Testing In the space below describe how your bridge performed under load (use photographs where necessary)

Evaluation & Testing In the space below, describe three modifications that you could make to your bridge to increase its strength (use photographs, illustrations or sketches where necessary).
