SPELLING Spelling will be on a Friday to Friday schedule. On Friday, a pretest will be given which will let your child know which words he/she needs to practice. The spelling words will go home in the homework folder for practice. The final test will be given the following Friday and scores will be recorded. If your child “tests out” of the list (100% on challenge and spelling words), I will give them a challenge list to study. The children that do not need to take the regular spelling list will only need to show that they have practiced their spelling words during the week. They will not have to do the High frequency words will also be added periodically to weekly spelling lists. Along with the required spelling lists we also work on analyzing and spelling words according to the phonics principles on which we are working.

HOMEWORK This year a homework folder will come home on Friday to be returned on the following Thursday. Daily homework consists of practicing spelling words, reading, and math practice. In the folder, your child will keep track of the books read at home on a reading log. Additional assignments may be added throughout the year and will be listed on the Homework Cover Sheet. Your child should be able to do homework independently. 30-40 minutes a day for homework is the norm in 3rd grade, which includes reading time. I ask that you look over your child’s homework and sign the cover sheet.

Homework Hero- Also, if your child is a “Homework Hero”, please sign the Homework Hero section of the Cover Sheet. Your child is a homework hero if he/she does his/her homework without any fuss that week. If your child has 4/5 “hero” weeks, they will be rewarded for their hard work! OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION Phone Use According to the school policy children are not allowed to use the phone. Please be sure your child knows where to go after school. He/she may not call you to make plans with friends Choice Time Choice time is on Thursday afternoon and is for students who have completed their responsibilities for the week. Those who have not finished assignments need to use this time as a study hall to complete whatever needs to be finished.

Birthdays If your child wishes to celebrate his/her birthday with our class, we will sing “Happy Birthday” and have treats at 2:50pm. Send in treats, drop them by, or bring them to the classroom at 2:50pm. If there is more than one birthday in a month, we will have a group birthday celebration on a set day that month. Book Orders I send out multiple book club orders. You may just write one check for the full amount made payable to Scholastic Books. Website I do have a class webpage located under classroom pages on the Aspen Elementary SchoolFusion webpage. I will try to list all notes and newsletters I send home on my webpage. You can find it and any back issues on my website. Communication I value our partnership in making your child’s year a success. The best way to communicate with me is by email. I will try to reply back within 24hrs. For day-of communication like a change in after-school plans, please leave a phone message before 2:00.

Culture Collection Your child will be asked to create a “Culture Collection” once over the course of the year. We have discussed the word “culture” and how each person has a “culture” of their own. A person’s culture includes not only their family background and heritage, but also their interests and ideas. When they share their “Culture Collection” with us, they will share clues about their interests, hobbies and also any information that they have about their family background (ie. where their ancestors are from, etc.) The children will bring their “Culture Collection” in on Mondays and they will share their collections on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Ideas: **soccer ball if you like to play soccer **football jersey if you play football **tennis racket if you play tennis **sheet music if you play an instrument ** pictures of family members **a treat from a country of the family background ** maps showing country of family background **a symbol of the country of your background (ie. 4 leaf clover if you are from Ireland)
