2 SAFETY LEADERSHIP LEADERS ESTABLISH VALUES, DEVELOP PROCEDURES, AND ENFORCE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THEIR SAFETY SAFETY LEADERS SET THE STANDARDS OF SAFE BEHAVIOR WITHIN THEIR COMPANIES

3 SAFETY LEADERSHIP DEFINED: SAFETY LEADERSHIP IS DEFINED AS THE PROCESS OF INTERACTION BETWEEN LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS, THROUGH WHICH LEADERS CAN EXERT THEIR INFLUENCE ON FOLLOWERS TO ACHIEVE ORGANIZATIONAL SAFETY GOALS. SAFETY LEADERSHIP BE AWARE OF SAFETY HAZARDS AT ALL TIMES.

5 WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE A LEADER IN SAFETY? SIMPLY PUT, YOU ARE A LEADER HERE AT RENTON HIGH SCHOOL. IN ORDER FOR YOU AND OTHERS TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU ALSO NEED TO BE SAFE. IT IS UP TO YOU TO NOT ONLY DEMONSTRATE THESE PRACTICES, BUT TO HELP ENSURE OTHERS ARE FOLLOWING THEM AS WELL.

6 HOW CAN YOU BE A SAFETY LEADER? BEING AN EXAMPLE, BY KNOWING AND FOLLOWING THE RULES AVOIDING COMPLACENCY FOR THE DANGERS OF THE TASK, PROCESS, EVENT, OR ACTIVITY REPORTING SAFETY HAZARDS, VIOLATIONS, AND INCIDENTS MAINTAINING OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH PEERS, TEACHERS, AND OTHER ADULTS PRESENT IMPLEMENTING CHANGE TO IMPROVE SAFETY AND WORKING CONDITIONS ENCOURAGING PEERS TO EXHIBIT SAFE BEHAVIORS ACKNOWLEDGING PEERS WHEN THEY ARE WORKING IN A MANNER THAT EXHIBITS CRITICAL THINKING AND SAFETY MAKING PEERS AWARE THAT UNSAFE BEHAVIOR IS UNACCEPTABLE SUGGESTING NEW WAYS AND IDEAS FOR IMPROVING SAFETY IN SITUATIONS

8 INTERNET USE YOU MUST ADHERE TO RENTON SCHOOL DISTRICT INTERNET POLICY BE CONSCIENTIOUS OF THE TYPES OF SEARCHES YOU DO AND THE WORDS YOU TYPE INTO THE SEARCH ENGINES DISCUSSION: WHY ARE THESE THINGS IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE OF AND FOLLOW?

9 WORKING WITH THE ILC STUDENTS BE AWARE OF YOUR BEHAVIOR AND HOW IT INFLUENCES THE ILC KIDS WHY? THEY ARE AT A MUCH YOUNGER MENTAL DEVELOPMENT STAGE THAN YOU ARE AND MAY EASILY MISINTERPRET THINGS EXAMPLES: PHYSICAL CONTACT. NO HUGGING MEDIA AWARENESS. DO NOT SWAP PHONE NUMBERS, SOCIAL MEDIA REQUESTS, ETC. THESE THINGS HAVE BEEN PROBLEMATIC IN THE PAST. BE AWARE OF LANGUAGE USED. NO SWEAR WORDS. NO GRAY-AREA TOPICS NO CELL PHONES. ILC STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE THEM OUT AND USE THEM. RESPECT THEIR RULES AND FOLLOW THEM AS WELL. NO FOOD. ILC STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SNACK THROUGHOUT CLASS. RESPECT THEIR RULES AND FOLLOW THEM. BE AWARE OF SAFETY, CHOICES, AND THE EXAMPLE THAT YOU SET FOR THEM. BE A ROLE MODEL.

10 RUNNING SCHOOL EVENTS KEEP IN MIND SCHOOL POLICIES. YOU MUST ADHERE TO THESE WHILE REPRESENTING RHS, BOTH AT IN- SCHOOL EVENTS AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL EVENTS KEEP IN MIND YOUR DRESS AND HOW IT PRESENTS YOU AND THE SCHOOL KEEP IN MIND THE WORDS THAT COME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT YOU ARE IN, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN CHARGE, AND THE RULES THAT ARE IN PLACE FOLLOW THROUGH WITH DIRECTIONS GIVEN TO YOU IN AN APPROPRIATE MANNER, WITH DEDICATION AND THOROUGHNESS YOU ARE A DIRECT REFLECTION OF RENTON HIGH SCHOOL, ASB, AND THE LEADERSHIP CLASS

11 COMMUNICATION “SKILL IN THE ART OF COMMUNICATION IS CRUCIAL TO A LEADER’S SUCCESS. HE CAN ACCOMPLISH NOTHING UNLESS HE CAN COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY.” –ANNONYMOUS IN YOUR JOURNALS, REFLECT ON THIS QUOTE. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? CLASS DISCUSSION

12 WITHOUT INTENTIONAL AND CLEAR COMMUNICATION, WE DO NOT WORK WELL TOGETHER AS A TEAM. COMMUNICATION HELPS PREVENT ACCIDENTS, CONFUSION, DANGEROUS SITUATION, CLARITY ON PROJECTS, BRING ABOUT SUCCESS.

14 THE WORDS YOU SPEAK ARE ALSO VERY POWERFUL. WILL YOUR WORDS BUILD A POSITIVE FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS, ENCOURAGEMENT, AND BETTER COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE DYNAMICS OF OUR GOALS IN LEADERSHIP? OR WILL THEY TEAR DOWN OUR GOALS, HURT PEOPLE, CAUSE ISSUES, AND DAMAGE RELATIONSHIPS?

DO NOT RUN WITH THEM, DO NOT HAVE SCISSOR WARS WITH PEOPLE, DO NOT PRETEND THEY ARE AN ANCIENT THROWING TOOL AND CHUCK THEM AT WALLS. YOU GET THE PICTURE? USE SHARP OBJECTS RESPONSIBLY!
