2 What is an American? Unlike most nations, there are no racial, religious, or cultural aspects to our nationality. We are a nation of immigrants Immigration: 1.When people move from the country of their birth to America 2.Because America is made up of people from many cultures it has led to a more diverse society

3 What is an American citizen? 14 th Amendment: Defined American citizenship to include “all persons” born or naturalized in the U.S.

4 A government of citizens American Citizenship: 1.Anyone born in the U.S. or U.S. territories or bases is a “native- born” citizen 2.If either parent is a citizen, you are also “native-born” 3.Legal immigrants can become citizens if they complete the naturalization process Naturalization Process 1.Must live here 5 years 2.Must be able to speak, read, and write in English 3.Must pass a test proving knowledge of American history and government 4.Final step is a loyalty oath to U.S.

5 Citizens Owe Duties of Citizenship (must do or face legal consequences): 1.Obey the laws 2.Paying taxes 3.Serve in armed forces if called 4.Serve on a jury or as a witness Responsibilities of Citizens (should do): 1.Keep informed on current issues 2.Communicate with government officials 3.Respect others’ right to an equal voice in government 4.Register and vote 5.Run for office/participate in campaigns

6 The Best Citizens Traits of Good (Virtuous) Citizens: 1.Trustworthy and honest 2.Courtesy and respect for the rights of others 3.Responsible, accountable, and self-reliant 4.Patriotism 5.Participation in the school and/or community
