2  A citizen is a person with rights, duties and responsibilities under a government.

3 Rights- Legal guarantees under a government. Duties- Things that someone is expected to do. Responsibilities- Things that someone may choose to do, but still important to being a good citizen.

4  Anyone born in the United States or a territory of the United states.  Anyone who had at least one parent who was a United States citizen when they were born.  You have been naturalized.

6 Territory- An area controlled by the U.S. government but not a state. Naturalization- The process someone goes through to become a citizen.

9 Application- Asking for something in a formal way

10  A person who wants to become a citizen fills out a form and submits it to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

11  In order to become a citizen, the applicant must prove the following things:  Be at least 18 years old  Live in the country for at least 5 years  Have good moral character (No criminal record)  Be loyal to the Constitution  Read, write and speak English  Have a knowledge of history and government of U.S. (Must pass citizenship test)

12 Moral character- The ability to tell right from wrong.

14  The right to vote and hold elected office.  The right to say what you think in speech or writing as long as it doesn’t infringe on someone else’s rights.  The right to practice your own religion.  The right to have a fair trial.

18 Jury- A group of ordinary citizens who hear a court case and decide if the accused person is guilty or innocent. Witness-People who have seen events related to a crime or have information that may help decide the guilt or innocence of a person.

19  Work toward the common good.  Voting.  Holding a public office.  Participate in election campaigns.  Serve the community.

20 Common Good-The well-being of all members of society.

22 1. Jury-A. A group of ordinary citizens who hear a court case and decide if the accused person is guilty or innocent. 2. Witness- B. The well-being of all members of society. 3. Common Good- C. People who have seen events related to a crime or have information that may help decide the guilt or innocence of a person.

23  Family Member  Friend  Student or Worker  Social Group Member  Citizen  Consumer The first 3 roles are self explanatory. The last 3 are a bit more complicated. Let’s look at them more closely.

24  People choose to be members of social groups.  Examples could be clubs, organizations, or teams.

25  Some people choose to be active participants in their citizen role.  Active participants can run for office, attend political meetings, and vote.  Some people choose to be less active in their citizen role.  These people contribute to the common good through volunteering, donating money to charities, or working in jobs that help people.

27 Charity- An organization that helps less fortunate people.

28  Every time a person buys something or pays for a service, they are a consumer.  The consumer role is played by almost everyone and is important to keep our country running.

29 Consumer-A person who buys goods or services.

30  People must decide how much time and energy they put into being a citizen.  Each person will have a different way of approaching this.  A person’s opinion of their citizenship role may change with age, interests, and career choice.

31 Priority- Something that is more important than other things.
