You do not need to write the questions, BUT you should write your answers in such a way that you know the question being asked (this will help with the study guide and studying overall). Example: Question: Who seem to be the winners in the “Scramble for Africa”? Bad Answer: France and Britain Good Answer: France and Britain seem to be the winners in the “Scramble for Africa.”

4 1. Africa 1876 A.This is Africa in 1876. How is it different from the map you colored yesterday? B.About how much of Africa is colonized by other countries in this map? C.What generalizations can you make about what happened in Africa from 1876-1914?

5 2. The Berlin Conference 1884 A.In the late 19 th century, Germany began launching explorations into Africa. Why would this worry Britain and France (among other countries)? B.To avoid conflict, a conference was organized to discuss Africa. Representatives from the countries to the left attended. Who is missing? C.The conference made the “Scramble for Africa” an organized colonization and trade experience. Why was this important for the European countries? D.In Africa, European powers eliminated most of the current forms of African government and rule. What other effects did this colonization have on Africa?
