Getting ready for Placement

Why do we do placements? To gain experience in a care setting To gain experience in a work setting (University requirement) It is a requirement of the course To have a chance to look at roles and job descriptions in a care setting To meet and have contact with service users

To be able to provide care (depending on your age and on the setting). This will range from making teas and coffees and talking with service users to more personal care (feeding a service user). You should not be asked to do anything outside your comfort zone or your without training.

To have the opportunity to see what you have learned in college (theory) be used in the care setting (practice.) To be able to identify the legislation, policies and procedures which sit under and support everything that is done in the placement.

What are the skills and qualities needed in work placement? You should have an induction at your placement but we know that this is not always done. You need to think about what might be needed and make sure that you find out about them. This might include their fire evacuation procedure.

Communication Hand washing Confidentiality Team work Looking for opportunities to be as involved as you possibly can

Recognising that you will have limitations placed on what you can and can not do Recognising that making a cup of tea for a service user, sitting and talking with them, might be a very important caring activity
