2 What are you learning: Today I will learn about different landforms and physical features So that I can recognize and interpret landforms on maps I Know I will have it when I can define and describe 10 landforms to my partner.

3 Landforms: natural features of the landscape, natural physical features of the earth's surface

4 Landforms  Basin  Canal  Delta  Isthmus  Peninsula  Mesa  Plain  Plateaus  Port  Strait  Tributary  Glacier  Bay  Valley  Canyon  Island

5 Basin  A bowl shaped area of land surrounded by higher land

6 Canal  Narrow waterway dug across land mainly for ship travel

7 Delta  A sometimes triangle shaped area of land at the mouth of a river

8 Isthmus  A narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas.

9 Peninsulas  A piece of land that projects into a body of water. Water is on all 3 sides.

10 Mesa  Flat-topped mountain with steep sides  Means table in Spanish

11 Plains  A flat area on Earth’s surface.

12 Plateaus  A high wide area of flat land with steep sides.

13 Port  A place, usually in a harbor, where ships safely load and unload

14 Strait  A narrow channel of water joining two larger bodies of water.

15 Tributary  A stream or river that runs into a larger river

16 Glacier  Large ice mass that moves slowly down mountains or across land Alpine glaciers found in mountains Continental glaciers cover large parts of a continent.

17 Bay  A body of water partially enclosed by land but with a wide mouth, giving access to the sea or ocean

18 Valley  A valley is a low, wide area between higher lands such as mountains.

19 Canyon  A canyon is a steep gorge with very high sides and a minimal valley floor. A canyon is narrower and steeper than a valley. Can be caused by erosion.

20 Island  An island is land that has water all around it.
