5 Sabbatical Process Changed as of Spring 2015 (more on this later) To get ready to apply: – Read: The NEW Form 320: Sabbatical Leave Application, on the Academic Personnel Services (APS) website (updated 4/27/2015) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Article 27 – Gather supplemental materials (e.g., letters of support or invitations) Created by Suzanne Scott

6 Form 320: Sabbatical Leave Application Part I: Background Information New: If you’ve had a prior sabbatical, attach the actual report. Also append the letter from your dean indicating the submission of your prior sabbatical report. Part II: Project Proposal Includes: Description of your Project(s) New: 1250-word maximum. Part III: Submitting the Application New: Notarized Certification Page (re: Promissory Note, if applicable, or Description of Attachable Assets) now occurs only after sabbatical is approved. 7 Form 320: Sabbatical Leave Application Changes If you have had a sabbatical before: – a copy of the most recent sabbatical report is due, and – the letter of response acknowledging receipt of your sabbatical report (this was always required) Note 1250-word limit to the description of the sabbatical. Benefits to the CSU no longer includes “maintaining currency in one’s field.” Created by Suzanne Scott

8 Fo rm 320: Sabbatical Leave Application Changes (continued) Supporting materials are listed, such as: contracts, letters of support, publisher’s correspondence “Evaluation of Proposals” section highlights the primary and significant factors in evaluation. 9 Evaluation Criteria Description of the project(s), understandable by educated layperson. We’re looking for: – Thoroughness – Specificity – Clarity of proposal – Brevity (1250-word maximum) Benefit to the CSU – This is primary Likelihood of achieving goals – This is significant Created by Suzanne Scott

10 Benefits to the CSU May include: – Research – Scholarship and creative activity – Instructional improvement – Faculty retraining Created by Suzanne Scott

11 Likelihood of Achieving Goals E.g.: – Providing a timeline of proposed steps – Documentation of your past (relevant) scholarship (e.g., short CV—up to 2 pages) – Letters of support (e.g., from co-authors) (a maximum of 4) Do not submit manuscripts, art work, etc. Created by Suzanne Scott

13 Process, cont’d The Dean and Chair receive a copy of the PLC recommendation (Senate Resolution #18-13/14, effective from AY 2014-15  ) The PLC does not see: – Dean recommendation – Chair letter re: impact of leave on dept. PLC never sees applicant’s WPAF Created by Suzanne Scott

14 Process, cont’d PLC’s recommendation is solely advisory to the Provost Provost (who sees PLC, Dean, and Chair letters) makes the sabbatical decisions CBA requires a minimum of 12% of eligible faculty receive sabbaticals each year Created by Suzanne Scott

15 PLC Rating of Applications Three ratings: Highly recommended Recommended Not recommended Created by Suzanne Scott

16 Highly Recommended Reasonably thorough, specific, and clear descriptions of the purpose and goals Indication how the goals would be achieved during the time proposed Potential benefits to the CSU (e.g., through research, scholarly and creative activity, instructional improvement, and/or faculty retraining) May include supporting documentation and/or itemized lists of needed CSU resources PLC agrees a high likelihood that the applicants in this category will achieve their goals Created by Suzanne Scott

17 Recommended Worthy project(s) Proposal does not address issues with the clarity or depth needed to highly recommend (e.g., clear description of project; benefits to CSU; likelihood of achieving goals) Created by Suzanne Scott, PLC Chair 2014- 16

18 Not Recommended Does not thoroughly or clearly address all the selection criteria Proposal raises concerns or questions about: – the overall potential feasibility, and/or – benefits of the plans, and/or – the likelihood of achieving the proposed goals Created by Suzanne Scott

19 Deadlines Sabbatical applications are due the first Monday in October. Monday, October 3 rd, 2016, by 5 pm PST. – Applicant submits electronically to: APS Dean Chair Created by Suzanne Scott

20 Sabbatical Schedule Applications due: M, Oct. 3, 2016, 5 p.m. Dept. commentary re: impact on dept. due to Dean: M, Oct. 17 Dean and PLC letters (independently) due: M, Nov. 7 If applicant responding to Dean and/or PLC, due: M, Nov. 14 Provost decision: M, Dec. 5 If applicant responding to Provost: M, Dec. 12 Created by Suzanne Scott
