2  Here are two questions that I want you to think about: Is sentencing a killer under the age of 18 to the death penalty cruel and unusual punishment? Should juveniles be punished less harshly than adults?

3 What we will do: Over the next several weeks, we will read articles in class discussing the pros and cons of juvenile justice What you will do: Work in small groups to read and annotate the articles, share ideas in class, and develop an opinion about juvenile justice How you will show Mr. King what you have learned: Write a persuasive essay on juvenile justice Give a speech in class that highlights your main points

4  I will pass out a Juvenile Justice worksheet to you  This worksheet contains legal terms and definitions  Add the new vocabulary to the front of this sheet

5  Cruel and Unusual Punishment : Criminal punishment that is unacceptable because of the pain, suffering, and/or humiliation inflicted on the convicted person  Death Penalty : Also called Capital Punishment, it is the sentence of death given to a convicted person by a jury  Juvenile : a person under the age of 18 years  Demeanor : outward behavior

6  Jury: Group of people who must give an impartial verdict in a court case

7  In California : Murder and Homicide is broken into two categories: 1 st Degree Murder25 years to life 2 nd Degree Murder15 years to life Voluntary Manslaughter 3-11 years Involuntary Manslaughter2-4 years

8  Pick one partner  Using the back side of your Juvenile Justice worksheet, write the crime/conviction charge and the punishment or sentencing for each crime

9 LET’S SEE HOW YOU DID!CONVICTIONS/SENTENCING  A 17 year old troubled girl…  Three 16 year olds were…  Thinking his girlfriend is cheating…  A 13 year old boy breaks into…  1 st Degree Murder; Life in prison without parole  Involuntary Manslaughter; 3 years in prison  Voluntary Manslaughter; 6 years in prison  2 nd Degree Murder; 15 years to life

10  Read the Focus Questions  Answer each question by yourself on a separate piece of paper

11  How do I annotate an article? Annotating is done by: -Highlighting important passages -Taking notes in the margins of the page -Using another sheet of paper to take notes -Asking your partner to clarify information and writing the new information down -Asking questions

12  Why should I need to annotate my article? -You can easily find articles that support your position -You save time by not having to reread the entire article -You can organize your arguments

13  Begin to read the opposing viewpoints article  Annotate the article at your table  While reading the article, highlight passages that are PRO and CON  Pro = juveniles should be tried as adults  Con = juveniles should not be tried as adults

14  Watch Mr. King annotate his article  What did you notice???  Add additional information to your article
