Integrating Quotes

Why do we integrate quotes? The quote needs to be “held down” by your own words. This will help connect your quoted information to your paragraph. You can never have a quote standing alone!

Method 1: Introduce the quote with a complete sentence and a colon. Michael Walden asserts that Amazon will have more competition soon: “The Chinese owned Alibaba recently entered the U.S. marketplace... which could give Amazon a run for its money” (Majerol 17). Brad Graham directly states his opinion: “... in some ways the competition has been a good thing, forcing bookshops to reinvent themselves” (Majerol 17).

“Top college football and men’s basketball players put in up to 60 hours a week in games and practice, leaving them little time for academics” (Majerol 15). Using method #1, write a sentence that integrates some or all of the following quote.

Method 2: Use an introductory phrase that is NOT a complete sentence separated from the quote with a comma. Majerol suggests that Amazon’s practices are unfair when she says, “Amazon... raised prices on some items, pulled others from the virtual shelves altogether, and created shipping delays of up to a month” (16). According to Michael Walden, “... although Amazon may seem unstoppable now, history has shown that even the biggest Internet companies can stumble” (Majerol 17).

Using method #2, write a sentence that integrates some or all of the following quote. “For most of the past 150 years, playing for the love of the game rather than for profit has been a powerful ideal” (Majerol 14).

Method 3: Make the quotation part of your own sentence without any extra punctuation. Majerol suggests that Amazon’s practices are unfair when she says that “Amazon... raised prices on some items, pulled others from the virtual shelves altogether, and created shipping delays of up to a month” (16). There are some suppliers that refuse to sell their goods on Amazon because “... Amazon’s hardball tactics have some critics arguing that the world’s largest online retailer has grown too powerful” (Majerol 16).

Using method #3, write a sentence that integrates some or all of the following quote. “Taking away athletes’ amateur status would be the ‘end of college sports as we know it,’ says NCAA president Mark Emmert, because it opens the door for paying star salaries” (Majerol 15).

Method 4: Use only a few words of the quote as part of your own sentence. The author argues that Amazon is primarily concerned about offering cheaper prices “even if it hurts profits” (Majerol 17) for a short time period. According to Majerol, other retailers are “finding new ways to compete” (17).

Using method #4, write a sentence that integrates part of the following quote. “Last month, it voted to let top sports programs offer better scholarships and health insurance, and to allow players to consult agents” (Majerol 15).
