The Monroe Doctrine was not enough!

So… Roosevelt creates the Roosevelt Corollary Roosevelt Corollary warned that disorder in Latin America might force the U.S. to use force to protect its’ economic interests in Latin America.

1. Said that the United States had the right to interfere in the economic matters of other nations in the Americas claimed the United States’ right to exercise international police power 2. claimed the United States’ right to exercise international police power

Roosevelt Corollary carry a big stick Big Stick Policy: “Speak softly and carry a big stick”. “Roosevelt’s Corollary” Also referred to as “Roosevelt’s Corollary”

So how WHY would the US protect all of these countries?

One way the US wanted to make money was trade. What was a problem with the trade from the Pacific to the Atlantic?

The perfect example of the Roosevelt Corollary was The Panama Canal

A concession is a grant for a piece of land in exchange for a promise to use the land for a specific purpose. Defeated by yellow fever and mismanagement, the company abandoned the project and offered its remaining rights to the United States for $100 million. Americans needed a shorter route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A French company had bought a 25-year concession from Colombia to build a canal across Panama.

 quick access to Atlantic & Pacific  military protection of territories  trade & economic value would increase

Roosevelt picture at canal Roosevelt at the canal Important to the destiny of the US $400 million to build Began in 1904 and completed by 1914 Army engineer George Goethals organized the construction. Dr. Walter Reed found ways to deal with yellow fever

Construction of the Panama Canal ranks as one of the world’s greatest engineering feats

The Panama Canal shortened the distance between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Island Possessions

Roosevelt does not run for office again. He is more interested in exploring Nature. Always remember “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”
