Draw a picture that contains A house A tree A river A pond A snake

We are learning about... We are learning how to... We need to use... Psychodynamic explanations of phobias Analyse real world behaviour Compare and contrast theories Noticing Making links

Assumptions We are animals, driven by basic biological instincts Becoming a person (i.e. developing) involves channeling our instincts into constructive ways of acting How we do this depends on our early childhood experiences We are unaware of most of the true reasons for our actions

How does Freud’s view of human nature compare with Watson’s? Are they similar or different? Make sure you can justify your comments.

The Unconscious The conscious. The small amount of mental activity we know about. The preconscious. Things we could be aware of if we wanted or tried. The unconscious. Things we are unaware of and can not become aware of. The things we are conscious of thinking, wanting, saying and doing. The real things we think and want and the hidden meanings of what we say and do. Bad Worse Really Bad

Everything you think, say or do has a secret, hidden meaning.

What your picture says about you House = representation of yourself Pond = your mind Tree = your relationship with the opposite sex River = relationship with your mother Snake = your libido (sex drive)

The Psyche (Personality) Id: Instincts Superego: Morality Ego: Reality I WANT I WILL I SHOULD

We are always in conflict with ourselves. What we end up thinking, saying or doing is always a compromise between instinct, morality and reality.

How would you respond if… Your mum has baked a cake and left it on the kitchen table? You work in a shop – someone has overpaid you and apparently not noticed? You’ve just met your best friend’s boyfriend and really fancy him?

Phobias Like everything else, psychological symptoms have a hidden meaning. – When a person has a phobia what they consciously fear isn’t what they’re really afraid of. The conscious fear is just a symbol of the real fear.

The Case of ‘Little Hans’ Read the account of Freud’s case study ‘Analysis of Phobia in a 5-Year-Old Boy’. – What was Hans’s manifest fear? – What was his latent (hidden) fear? – How did Hans’s conscious thoughts symbolise his unconscious ones?

How did Freud’s use of the case study differ from Watson and Rayner’s?

Psychodynamic and behaviourist Are they similar or different in their... – View of ‘human nature’ – Position in the ‘nature-nurture’ debate – Beliefs about change during the lifespan – Beliefs about free will – Preferred research methods Homework pt. 1 – read the sections on these two approaches in your text & decide whether your initial ideas need revising

Homework pt. 2 Write a blog entry explaining how a psychodynamic psychologist might explain your bad habit. Add a brief commentary explaining which theory (behaviourist or psychodynamic) you find more convincing. Justify your preference.
