2 2 What is grief? Grief is: The emotional, psychological, and physical reaction to death or loss. A healthy, natural reaction. Occurs with all types of losses, not just death.

3 3 Grief stages 1. Shock, disbelief, numbness. 2. Sadness, guilt, anger, or even relief if the deceased had been suffering. 3. Depression. 4. Recovery.

4 4 Symptoms of grief Depression Compulsive behavior Irritability Confusion Fatigue Anxiety Fear Physical discomfort Lack of caring

5 5 Grief in the long-term care environment Think about: Which residents will affect you most? What is your personal coping style? Do you have a support network inside and outside of work?

6 6 Ways to cope with grief Unhealthy tactics Substance abuse Eating “Retail therapy” Healthy tactics Time with friends & family Exercise Music or reading

7 7 When a resident dies Be compassionate with yourself. Share experience with coworkers. Recognize the contributions you made. Practice self-care.

8 8 Help a grieving coworker Acknowledge their grief. Pitch in to ease their workload. Be a good listener. Write a personal note. Share your memories of the resident.
