2 Aims for this session By the end of the day you should be able to: State the employers’ responsibilities for providing clearly defined procedures for health and safety. Identify the groups of people for which employers are liable in terms of health and safety. State employees’ responsibilities for health and safety. State the rights of employees according to the Health and Safety at work Act. Identify sources of information required for maintaining legal requirements. Explain the importance of risk assessment.

3 Did you know…. Fatal injuries - 142 in 2014/15 Falling from a height Struck by a moving vehicle Struck by moving or falling objects. Fatal diseases - 13,000 deaths per year Past exposure to harmful working conditions causing lung diseases and cancer.

4 Did you know…. Injury - over 600,000 in 2014/15. Slips and trips, often resulting in broken bones, are the biggest cause. Ill health - HSE estimates that there are 1.2 million cases of ill health every year caused or made worse by work.

5 Did you know…. 27.3 million working days lost due to work-related illness. This is an average of 15 days per case. The cost to the UK is estimated at £14.3 billion in 2013/14 728 employees prosecuted 12,430 enforcement notices were issued

6 Employer’s responsibilities Produce a health, safety and welfare policy. Display health and safety poster. Health and safety staff contact details. Provide all necessary information, instruction, training and supervision. Provide a safe place of work with safe entry and exit. Provide a safe working environment. Provide safe systems of work. Arrange for the safe use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances.

7 Health and safety procedures It is an employer's responsibility to provide clearly defined procedures for health and safety. A procedure sets out step-by-step instructions on how to deal with an activity in the workplace.

8 Who is the employer responsible for? Employees Customers Visitors Contractors Public Trespassers

9 What are employee responsibilities? Take care of the health and safety of themselves and of others. Cooperate with the employer on health and safety matters. Not misuse safety equipment. Follow instructions from the employer on health and safety matters. Attend relevant health and safety training. Report hazards and defects.

10 9:1 Health & Safety At Work Act (HASAWA) ‘Act of Parliament that defines the fundamental structure and authority for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare within the United Kingdom.’ Match up the cards to complete the HASAW sentences.

12 Hazards and Risks HAZARD RISK ‘Risk is the likelihood that a person may be harmed if exposed to the hazard.’ ‘A Hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm.’

13 Risk Assessment What do you know about Risk Assessments and why are they important? The main aim of a risk assessment is to make sure that no one gets hurt or becomes ill. Accidents and ill health can ruin lives, and can affect business. Risk assessments reduce the risk of accidents happening.
