2 Integumentary System A system that is made up of parts that cover and protect the body Skin Hair Nails

3 Skin Epidermis The thin, outtermost layer of the skin Contains no blood vessels Dermis: The layer beneath the epidermis. A thick layer Contains hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands and nerves Helps protect other body parts from injury and infection. Helps maintain body temp.

5 Skin If you become too hot, sweat glands produce perspiration that cools you.sweat glands Produces melanin: a pigment that provides skin color and protects from UV rays Oil glands: keep hair from getting dry and brittle and skin from drying out.

6 Hair Hardened, dead cells. Roots are living cells deep in dermis

7 Nails Made up of dead cells.

8 Caring for the Integumentary System Clean skin and Scalp Treat dandruff Select foods containing Vitamin A Check moles and freckles regularly Wear Sunscreen of at least SPF 15 Read directions when using makeup Seek proper care for skin rashes
