5 Key Drivers for Open Access in the University Increased impact for research made openly available Public presentation of the University’s research profile Compliance with funding body policies on Open Access –Wellcome Trust –Research Councils UK Effectively managing our research publications

6 Open Access Week/Enlighten Report Total number of records in Enlighten as at September 2011: 42908 Total number of records added to Enlighten during the period 01/09/10 to 31/08/11: 14445 Total amount of full text added: 634

7 Publications Policy Policy approved by Senate at the June 2008 meeting Various elements within the policy –Bibliographic details of all research outputs must be made available within Enlighten – applies from January 2008 onwards Work carried out for the RAE and REF pilots made it clear that the University needs a central way of managing publications data Data about research publications needs to be gathered on a regular ongoing basis Important to make full text of publications as widely available as possible in order to maximise visibility and impact

8 User Response: “I use Enlighten mainly as an extra way to increase free access to the pre-journal-print text of my papers, to interested readers who may not have a subscription to the journals concerned. It’s also a good way to update the University REF data, and personal web page, with publications as they arise. I don’t, however, use Enlighten generally to search for journal articles or authors because I prefer reading the post-print version of articles, and GU seems to have subscriptions for all those that I need. I tend to use Pubmed for that. The Enlighten service certainly is very helpful: I find the staff professional and prompt and well informed about copyright issues etc.”
