1 Follow these directions: 1.Write down your homework. 2.Pick up last week’s essay on the laptop cart. 3.You will need your colored pencils today. You may go to your locker to retrieve them if necessary.

2 Today you will learn… how to organize the ideas in your body paragraphs.

3 Organization is… the arrangement of the essay’s content into an introduction, body, and conclusion. the ordering of sentences within paragraphs. the connection of paragraphs with transitions.

4 First Body Paragraph (at least 8 sentences) Topic sentence which introduces your first idea 1 st Detail sentence to support this idea Sentence(s) to Explain or Expand on this detail 2 nd Detail sentence to support this idea Sentence(s) to Explain or Expand on this detail 3 rd Detail sentence to support this idea Sentence(s) to Explain or Expand on this detail Concluding sentence which wraps up your first idea

5 When writing a body paragraph, use AREA structure… A – Argument R – Reason E – Evidence Explanation A – Argument

6 Argument First sentence – topic sentence Answers:  What are you trying to prove?  What’s your position/opinion? When you write an argument,  use words from the prompt

7 Reason First sentence – topic sentence Answers:  Why do you have that position/opinion/argument? When you write a reason,  use the word “because”  add it to your argument

8 Evidence Answers:  Why is your reason true? When you write evidence,  use transitions words like, “for example” or “for instance”  use personal experience or facts from a text

9 Explanation Answers:  So what does your evidence prove? When you write explanation,  put the evidence into your own words  connect the evidence back to your reason and argument

10 Argument Last sentence – conclusion sentence Answers:  What are you trying to prove?  What’s your position/opinion? When you write an argument for the conclusion sentence,  use synonyms for words in the prompt

11 Color-code your body paragraphs: A: argument R: reason E: evidence (3) explanation (3) A: argument – conclusion sentence What’s missing? Add the letter as a placeholder. Revise later. topic sentence
