What is scale? Think Write Share

Scale…… Gives us the relationship between the measurements and the drawing or model and the measurements of the real object. Scale model- used to represent an object that is too small or too big Scale drawing- used to represent an object that is too small or too big

Round Table You need one marker and one board per team! Come up with an example of when we may use scale in real life. Pass the board and the marker to the next person in your team. Keep passing until time is up. Team- Stand-n-Share

Some examples of when scale is used… On a map Architect drawings Amusement parks Enlarging or shrinking pictures Making a model car

To solve problems involving scale we can use proportions….. What if… On a map 1 cm = 144km This means for every 1cm on the map in real life it is 144 km. That is quite a difference The scale is 1cm= 144km Now we want to use the map to determine some actual distances.

Take out a sheet of paper Fold it like a hotdog Fold it like a hamburger Hamburger fold again YOU SHOULD HAVE 4 SECTIONS Label them steps 1 - 4

The scale is 1cm= 144km If on a map a distance measures 5.3 cm, what is the actual distance STEP 1: Set up a proportion Use: map = map actual actual STEP 2: Write the scale as a fraction 1cm 144 km

STEP 3: Set up the proportion with the given information: 1cm = 5.3cm 144 km x STEP 4: Use cross products to solve proportion: 1x= (144)(5.3) 1x = 763.2 X= 763.2 Therefore, 5.3cm on a map = 763.2 km in actual distance

Try some on your own We will use the same scale 1cm= 144km Find the actual distance if on a map the distance is 9.2cm? Follow the steps in your foldable. Did you get….

1cm = 9.2cm 144 km x 1x= (144)(9.2) 1x= 1,324.8 1,324.8km

Try using a different scale: 1/2in = 3feet In an architectural design the drawing distance is 7 inches. What is the actual distance? Follow the steps in your foldable: Did you get……

0.5in = 7in 3feet x 0.5x = (7)(3) 0.5x= 21 Divide each side by 0.5 X= 42 feet

Using the same scale:1/2in= 3feet What if the drawing distance was 2.3inches? Find the actual distance. Use your foldable Did you get……

0.5in = 2.3in 3feet x 0.5x = (3)(2.3) 0.5x= 6.9 Divide each side by 0.5 X = 13.8 13.8 feet

You will receive WS 309 ONLY put your name on the top Solve number one When you hear the timer pass your paper SIMULTANEOUS ROUNDTABLE

HOMEWORK: WS 310 #1-12 only
