RENEWABLE ENERGY UNIT ELEVEN

LEARNING OUTCOMES After studying the lesson the students will be able to-  Describe familiar objects  Participate in conversations discussion  Read intensively and extensively  Write formal letter

NEW VOCABULARY Stinky-having a strong unpleasant smell Splash-to strike someone or something with water Rural-relating to the countryside

Fossil-a bone, a shell or the shape of a plant or animal which has been preserved in rock for a long period

Remnant-a part that is left after the greater part has been used, removed or destroyed Replenish-to fill something up again Depth-the distance from the top or surface to the bottom of something

Turbine-a wheel driven by water, air or stream

Hydroelectric-developing electricity from water power

Renewable Energy Sources Energy Solar energy Wind energy water or hydropower Biomass energy

Non-renewable energy Coal Natural gas Fossil fuels Nuclear

Indian president Mr. APJ Abdul Kalam has put so much importance to the issue of energy

According to Mr. Kalam, the only solution of future energy crisis is the massive use of solar energy in future

Solar Energy Cycle

Sun’s heat drives the wind & this wind energy can be captured with wind turbines to produce electricity

Water cycle Sun’s heat cause water to evaporate This water vapor turns into rain or snow & flows into rivers This energy is captured as ‘hydro- electric energy’

Biomass

Bioenergy

Hydropower/Hydrogen energy

Geothermal Energy

Ocean’s force of tide & wave can be used to produce energy

PAIR WORK Read the words in the box & select words that are related to energy Fuel oil soil gas coal Desert forest Valley Waterfall wind Fossil relic remnant Sign sun

HOME WORK Answer the following questions  What do you mean by renewable energy sources?  What are the problems with non- renewable energy sources?  What are the major differences between renewable and non-renewable energy sources?  Why is renewable energy called ‘green energy’?

Thank you all!
