Chapter 6 Words to Know Key WordMeaning  catalyst catalytic converter combustion decomposition double replacement neutralization (acid-base) precipitate rate of reaction single replacement surface area synthesis

Chemical reactions can be classified as one of 6 main types: 1.Synthesis 2.Decomposition, 3.Single replacement, 4.Double replacement, 5.Neutralization (acid-base), and 6.Combustion.

You can identify each type of reaction by examining the reactants. This makes it possible to classify a reaction and then predict the identity of the products.

2H 2 + O 2 H 2 O S 8 + 12O 2 SO 3 2Ti + 3 Cl 2 TiCl 3 2Na + Cl 2 NaCl Find the pattern?

What Happens? Two or more reactants combine to produce a single product element + element Compound A + B AB Ex.1 sodium + chlorine sodium chloride 2Na + Cl 2 2NaCl Ex. 2 Magnesium + oxygen magnesium oxide 2 Mg + O 2 2 MgO Ex. 3 Nitrogen + oxygen dinitrogen monoxide 2N 2 + O 2 2N 2 O Synthesis Reaction

H 2 O 2H 2 + O 2 SO 3 S 8 + 12O 2 TiCl 3 2Ti + 3 Cl 2 NaCl 2Na + Cl 2 Find the pattern?

What Happens? A decomposition reaction is the breaking down of a compound into smaller compounds or separate elements. It is the reverse of a synthesis reaction Compound element + element AB A + B Ex. 1 sodium chloride sodium + chlorine 2NaCl 2Na + Cl 2 Ex. 2 Decomposition of water 2 H 2 O 2 H 2 + O 2 Decomposition Reaction

Fe + CuNO 3 Cu + Fe(NO 3 ) 2 KI + Cl 2  KCl +I 2 2NH 4 Br + Cl 2 2NH 4 Cl + Br 2 Al + NiBr 3 AlBr 3 + Ni Pattern?

A reactive element (a metal or non-metal) and a compound react to produce another element & another compound. In other words, one of the elements in the compound is replaced by another element element + compound A + BC B + AC Aluminum+copper(II) chloride aluminum chloride +copper 2 Al + 3 CuCl 2 2 AlCl 3 + 3 Cu Copper +silver nitrate silver + copper nitrate Cu + AgNO 3 2Ag + Cu(NO 3 ) 2 Fluorine & sodium iodide reacts to produce iodine and sodium fluoride F 2 + 2 NaI I 2 + 2 NaF

FeCl 2 + CuNO 3 CuCl 2 + Fe(NO 3 ) 2 KI + MgCl 2  KCl +MgI 2 2NH 4 Cl + CaBr 2 2NH 4 Br + CaCl 2 Al(OH) 3 + NiBr 3 AlBr 3 + Ni(OH) 3 Pattern?

What Happens Two ionic solutions react to produce two other ionic solutions. One of the compounds forms a precipitate (solid). Ionic solution + ionic solution ionic solution + ionic solid AB (aq) + CD (aq) AD (aq) + CB (s) Ex. 1 Lead (II) nitrate + sodium iodide sodium nitrate + lead(II) iodide Pb(NO 3 ) 2 + 2 NaI 2 NaNO 3 + PbI 2 Ex. 2 Sodium hydroxide + iron (III) chloride sodium chloride + iron (III) hydroxide 3 NaOH + 3 FeCl 3 3 NaCl + 3 Fe(OH) 3 Double Replacement

What Happens? An acid & a base react to form a salt + water (An acid formula usually has a HYDROGEN on the left hand side; The base formula has a METAL or NH 4 + on the left hand side, and OH - on the right) General equation Acid + base salt + water HX + MOH MX + H 2 O Ex. 1 Sulphuric acid + calcium hydroxide calcium sulphate + water H 2 SO 4 + Ca(OH) 2 CaSO 4 + 2 H 2 O Ex. 2 Phosphoric acid + iron (II) hydroxide iron (II) phosphate + water 2 H 3 PO 4 + 3 Fe(OH) 2 Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 + 6 H 2 O p263 Neutralization

HCl + Ca(OH) 2 CaCl 2 + H 2 O Acid + Base salt + water HNO 3 + NaOH NaNO 3 + H 2 O Mg(OH) 2 + H 2 SO 4  MgSO 4 + H 2 O H 3 PO 4 + KOH K 3 PO 4 + H 2 O Predict the products

CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + 2H 2 O 2C 2 H 2 + 5 O 2 4CO 2 + 2H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O C 3 H 8 + 5 O 2 3CO 2 + 4H 2 O Pattern?

What Happens? A reaction between a compound (or element) and oxygen to produce an oxide and heat C X H Y + O 2 → CO 2 + H 2 O - X &Y represent integers Ex. 1 Methane + oxygen carbon dioxide + water CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + 2H 2 O Ex. 2 Acetylene + oxygen carbon dioxide + water 2C 2 H 2 + 5O 2 4CO 2 + 2H 2 O Ex.3 glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O C 2 H 2 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O
