2 2 #1 PURPOSE OF A RESUME to win an interview. ♦The resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. convinces ♦It convinces the employer that you have what it takes to be successful in this new position or career. pleasing to the eye ♦It is so pleasing to the eye that the reader is enticed to pick it up and read it. inspires ♦It inspires the prospective employer to pick up the phone and ask you to come in for an interview.

3 3 Create A Resume Using communicate At one time or another, most of us are faced with the joy of creating a resume. If you've never created a resume before and don't know much about Microsoft Word, you may be wondering where to start. I can report that many people seem to forget that the first job of a resume is to communicate.

4 4 COMMUNICATION Always remember that the person tasked with reading your resume doesn't know or care who you are. These people may have to sort through hundreds of resumes every day, so they are an extremely tough audience. ► Using just that one little piece of paper, your mission is skillseducation to communicate your skills, education and experience experience as quickly and easily as possible.

5 5 READABILITY To enhance the readability of your resume, remember the importance of “ white space ”. Everyone has seen resumes that have been squashed down to fit one page. No one wants to read a resume set in a 6 point font. ♦ So with that in mind, set up your page with reasonable margins.

6 6 GETTING STARTED Microsoft Word  Double-click on Microsoft Word icon. ♦ TITLE BAR (Program Name, Minimize, Restore, Close) ♦ MENU BAR (File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Table) ♦ TOOLBARS (Standard and Formatting) ♦ Scrollbars (side & bottom) Enables you to scroll up/down or right/left. ♦ Document Window (This is where your text, graphic, charts, etc. will be displayed.) ♦ Task Pane (A column of information on the right side of documents.)

7 7 TEMPLATES ► From the Task Pane click General templates. (template window appears) ► Click on Other Documents Tab Resume Wizard (scroll and click on Resume Wizard ) ► Click OK.

8 8 RESUME WIZARD Resume Wizard The Resume Wizard creates a resume that is tailored to your preferences. NEXT ► Click NEXT to start.

9 9 STYLE What style would you like? ► Professional ► Contemporary ► elegant

10 10 TYPE Which type of resume would you like to create? ► Entry-level Resume ► Chronological Resume ► Functional Resume ► Professional Resume

11 11 ADDRESS What is your name and mailing address?  Name  Address  Phone  Fax  Email

12 12 STANDARD HEADINGS ► The resume style you’ve chosen usually includes these headings. ► Select check boxes for headings you want.  Objective  Education  Awards received  Interests and activities  Languages  Work experience  Hobbies  References

13 13 OPTIONAL HEADINGS ► These headings are sometimes included in this type of resume. ► Select check boxes for headings you want.  Extracurricular activities  Summer jobs  Summary of qualifications  Community activities  Professional memberships  Accreditations an licenses  Patents and publications  Civil service grades  Security clearance

14 14 ADD / SORT HEADING Are there any additional headings you would like to add to your resume? ADD Click ADD. Move UpMove DownRemove These are your resume headings. You can arrange headings by “highlighting” heading and clicking on Move Up or Move Down or you may Remove any headings.

15 15 RESUME WIZARD COMPLETE Wizard Those are all the answers the Wizard needs to create your resume! Finish Click Finish to view the document.

16 16 INSERT YOUR INFORMATION Resume Wizard highlight After Resume Wizard is complete you can highlight the default values and type your own information.

17 17 PREVIEW & PRINT Preview a Document Print PreviewPreview a Document – To view a document as it would be printed, select your “ Print Preview ” button from the “standard toolbar”. { Magnifying Glass Icon } Printing a DocumentPrinting a Document – To print the entire document, click the { Printer Icon } on the “standard toolbar”. File Print To print a page or range of pages, click “ File ” on the menu bar. Then click to access the “ Print ” window. Page Range * Page Range (ALL or select designated pages) Current Page * Current Page (Single page--insertion point is on)

18 18 SAVING A DOCUMENT 1 st time “ SAVE ” “ FILE ” “ SAVE ”. ( 1 st time ) Click “ SAVE ” button ( Floppy Icon ) on the “standard toolbar”; or click “ FILE ” on the “menu bar” and then “ SAVE ”. “ SAVE AS ” “ SAVE IN ”. * A “ SAVE AS ” box will appear. At the top, you will see “ SAVE IN ”. Click the drop down arrow to choose a place to save your work. { 3 ½ Floppy A } { 3 ½ Floppy A } “ SAVE AS ” “ FILE NAME ” * At the bottom of the “ SAVE AS ” window, you will see a highlighted “ FILE NAME ” box. Name your file. SAVE * Click SAVE on the right to save document.

19 19 GOOD LUCK! Armed with these little style & design tidbits, you are well on your way to creating a resume that stays out of that dreaded do-not-hire “ do-not-hire ” pile.
