3 Stress Management: Stress: The body’s response to real or imagined dangers and other life events. Stress Management: Identifying sources of stress and learning how to handle them in ways that promote good mental and emotional health.

4 Stress Management Continued You will always have positive and negative stress in your life. Positive Stress (Eustress)=Focusing on studying for a test so you do well. Negative Stress (Distress)=Not wanting to make a mistake in life What are some ways you manage stress?

5 Analyzing Influences Analyzing Influences: Deciding if you are surrounded by positive or negative influences. Analyze these stories – Decide what would influence you. 1. You go to the basketball game after school. Your friend dares you to sneak into the game without paying. 2. Lisa is grocery shopping at the store. She sees a bag of chips for $5.00 or a box of goldfish for $2.00. What influences her decision?

6 Communication Skills: Communication Skills Include: Speaking well Listening carefully Choosing the words you speak How you say those words -facial expressions and posture Interpersonal Skills: The sharing of thoughts and feelings with other people.

7 Refusal Skills Refusal Skills: Ways to effectively say NO. Use refusal skills when you need to avoid a behavior that is unhealthy, unsafe, goes against your values and beliefs, or illegal.

8 Refusal Skills Continued WAYS TO EFFECTIVELY SAY NO! S- Say NO- “No, I can’t go with you” Your Example: T-Tell why not- “I would be breaking a promise” Your Example: O-Offer other ideas- “What about tomorrow” Your Example: P-promptly Your Example: Give example of what you can say for each S-T-O-P example.

9 Conflict Resolution Skills People have different wants, needs, and ways of looking at and handling things… Conflict- A disagreement between people with opposing viewpoints, interests, and needs. Conflict Resolution Skills- Having the ability to end a disagreement or keep it from becoming a larger conflict.

10 Decision Making The process of making a choice or solving a problem. What to consider when making a decision… 1. The situation 2. List the options 3. Weigh the possible outcomes 4. Consider your values 5. Make a decision and act 6. Evaluate the decision

11 Goal Setting: The process of identifying something you want to accomplish and establishing measurable goals and timeframes

12 Advocacy Taking action in support of a cause. Example: -Each day you pass a busy intersection with no stop light. You might think its dangerous. How you could change this potential problem and advocate for safe streets?

13 Practicing Healthful Behaviors Can you think of your own healthful behaviors you already practice. Examples: 1. Exercise regularly so your heart and muscles grow stronger 2. Eat healthful foods and drink water so your body works more effectively 3. Get a good night’s sleep so you wake up with more energy
