3  Prophet to Jerusalem, Judah  He also referenced Israel, other nations  Prophesied during reigns of 4 kings 1:1  Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah  Called during Uzziah’s last year 6:1  Approx. 707 B.C. (15 yrs. after Israel’s fall) The Prophet Isaiah

4 The Man  Son of Amoz 1:1 (6 other references)  Name = “Salvation of the Lord” –Though he did preach a message of judgment on Judah’s sins, perhaps no other O.T. prophet speaks more of ultimate salvation in the Messiah  Appears to have been married 8:3  Father of 2 sons 7:3 8:1 The Prophet Isaiah

5 The Man  Well acquainted with politics of his day –Unable to say whether this knowledge was by Divine inspiration only, or also by a position at court (statesman) –We can say he was some type of royal “historiographer” 2 Chron 26:22 32:32  Jewish tradition claims he was one of those slain by Manasseh cp. Heb 11:37 The Prophet Isaiah

6 The Message  Prophesied in Judah (along with Micah)  At the same time, Amos & Hosea in Israel  He also pronounced judgments upon other nations (Syria, Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Arabia, Tyre)  More so God’s mouthpiece re: Judah’s need for repentance to avoid destruction  Many Messianic references (“Salvation”) The Prophet Isaiah

7 The Book  It can be divided into 2 main sections: Isa 1-39 “The Assyrian Period”  God’s use of Assyria to judge His people, other nations  Sins of Judah, other nations chronicled  Judah is spared from Assyrian destruction  Many references re: Christ, N.T. kingdom  Historical (non-prophetic) narrative bridges to 2nd section chs. 36-39 The Prophet Isaiah Jeff

10 Isaiah 1-39  Messages to Israel & Judah Isa 1-12 –Wickedness found among them (idols, immorality, ritualism, vanity) – God’s people are as Sodom & Gomorrah and will be treated as such – Yet, there is hope…a remnant – Even more so, the mountain of the Lord’s house will be established… Immanuel will be born… The Prophet Isaiah

11 Isaiah 1-39  Messages to other nations Isa 13-23 –All the prophets portray God as Ruler of all nations…all are accountable to Him – God will not reprove sin among His own people and disregard it among all the other nations – Series of judgments on other nations for their sins is detailed The Prophet Isaiah

12 Isaiah 1-39  Contrast of God’s people, other nations Isa 24-27 –A contrast is made between the judgments upon all nations for their sins (including Israel, Judah) and the glory to be restored to God’s people only – Deliverance can only be found in being God’s people The Prophet Isaiah

13 Isaiah 1-39  Rebukes & Promises Re: Judah’s Future Isa 28-35 –Rebuke of their attitude re: God’s word –Promise of the Cornerstone in Zion –Rebuke of their reliance upon Egypt –Promise of Jehovah being the Helper in their times of trouble The Prophet Isaiah

14 Isaiah 1-39  Historical (Non-prophetic) narrative that bridges to 2nd section Isa 36-39 –God saves Judah from Sennacherib and Rabshakeh via Isaiah’s counsel and Hezekiah’s prayer Isa 36-37 –Hezekiah’s deliverance from sickness… God adds 15 years to his life Isa 38 –Hezekiah’s foolishness with the Babylonians Isa 39 The Prophet Isaiah
