1 Bell Ringer: Please follow entering procedures. Please get your computer and turn in any homework. Then answer this question in your bell ringer section: What are three words you would use to describe Cookie? Why? Three sentences, 3 minutes.

2 * Learning Goal: The concept of heroes in literature * Essential Question: How does the characterization of the hero or villain impact how readers interpret them?

3 * Characterization: a description or representation of something or someone. * Character trait: a particular word used to describe someone. Usually defended with an example. (MUST be defended with an example in Comm Arts.) * Example: Mrs.Thompson is positive because she always tries to be excited about class and smiles, a lot!

4 * What are heroes and villains? What character trait might you give each? (2 minutes) * Today we will read “The Hero’s Test”. It is the first story with both a hero AND a villain.

5 * Words to Know: * Protagonist * Antagonist-an opponent of the protagonist or hero. * Minotaur-mythical creature * Labyrinth- elaborate maze. * Minor character-in the background, not the star.

6 * I will read the first three pages for you starting on page 26. While you are reading please think about how you would characterize some of the characters. I will model for you how to characterize as we read and discuss with you your own characterizations.

You will read the last three pages and do the following assignment: * Now look for the assignment on edmodo.com that is called Characterizing “The Hero’s Test”. * Click on Turn In * Then click on the document. * Copy and paste in to word. When completed paste in type your response here and turn in. * Please raise your hand when you are done. * (14 minutes)

9 * Exit Ticket: What character trait best describes the villain of the hero’s test? Vote on edmodo and discuss. (2 minutes)

10 * Homework: * What character trait would you give yourself? Why? * How do you think this character trait impacts your friends? Teachers? Family? * At least five sentences.
