MANAGEMENT AND FACILITY SAFETY

Your job is to enforce the rules and regulations. Your managers job is to make sure you are in compliance with the laws and rules are being enforced correctly. Management Responsibilities: Creating, reviewing, revising policies, procedures and EAPs. Addressing unsafe conditions Complying w Federal, State and Local Laws Maintaining records. Assisting after emergencies

MANAGEMENT AND FACILITY SAFETY What can a LG do to assist? Report and take action with unsafe conditions. Federal, State and Local Regulations: LG Cert requirements Facility design and safety features Pool capacities Staff training requirements Ratio of LGs to patrons Water sanitation procedures First Aid and Equipment LG Equipment Diving Depths

MANAGEMENT AND FACILITY SAFETY Federal and State labor laws affect which tasks LGs 18 and under may perform, including the hours they may work. Occupational Safety and Health Admin. (OSHA) is established to keep workers safe. Hazard Communication Standards: Protect employees from exposure to hazardous chemicals Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): Describes special precautions to take for each chemical and what to do if you come in contact with the chemicals. Employees have the right to know: what hazardous chemicals are at the facility, where they’re stored, the dangers of those chemicals, how to identify them, how to protect yourself, what to do if you’re exposed.

MANAGEMENT AND FACILITY SAFETY Blood Born Pathogens (BBP) OSHA regulation Reduces risks of diseases transmission Exposure control plans

THE DROWNING PROCESS Most of your time is spent of patron surveillance – Watching closely over people in the facility and intervening when necessary. You must understand the drowning process and be alert and attentive at all times. Drowning is a continuum of events that begins when a victims airway is submerged under the surface of the water. It can be stopped but will end in death if no intervention occurs.

THE DROWNING PROCESS Beginning to drown: When water enters the victims airway. This causes involuntary breath holding and then LARYNGOSPASM (which is the sudden closure of the larynx or windpipe). As oxygen levels drop, the laryngospasm begins to subside and the person can gasp for breath but instead inhale water into the lungs. Due to inadequate levels of oxygen, the victim might suffer cardiac arrest. This can occur in as little as 3 minutes. Brain damage and death can occur in as little as 4-6 minutes. Many intervening variables effect the outcome, including underlying medical conditions, and the time until EMS arrive.

THE DROWNING PROCESS In general, giving ventilations often will resuscitate a person if ventilations start within 1.5-2 minutes of drowning. When providing care: A victim might have isolated or infrequent gasping in the absence of other breathing, called AGONAL gasps. Agonal gasps occur even after the heart stops beating. Normal breathing is regular, quiet and effortless.

THE DROWNING PROCESS To give a victim the greatest chance of survival you must be quick to recognize a person in drowning. The sooner the process is stopped by getting the airway out of the water, the sooner ventilations can begin and the less the chances of brain damage or death.

EFFECTIVE SURVEILLANCE & VICTIM RECOGNITION Surveillance Video – 9 minutes What are some situations that lead to trouble for weak or non-swimmers? What are some situations that could lead to trouble for a swimmer?

EFFECTIVE SURVEILLANCE & VICTIM RECOGNITION List the characteristics of a distressed swimmer :

EFFECTIVE SURVEILLANCE & VICTIM RECOGNITION What instinctive drowning response behaviors would you see in a drowning victim who is struggling at or near the surface?

EFFECTIVE SURVEILLANCE & VICTIM RECOGNITION In some cases, what might a very small child look like when in trouble I the water?

EFFECTIVE SURVEILLANCE & VICTIM RECOGNITION What are some conditions that could lead to a patron becoming a drowning victim who appears to become unconscious?
