We are a skilled Team of Doctors working with children from birth to school leaving age, across the city of Birmingham We see children in a variety of settings including Health Centres, Schools, Children’s Centres and Child Development Centres. Who can refer? * check the Website Professionals including GPs School Nurses Teachers We work with the child and their family, Schools, Nurseries, Hospital Paediatricians and other Healthcare Professionals. 2 What will happen at the initial appointment? The Doctor will discuss your concerns and find out more about your child. We will identify key problem areas and give advice on how best to help your child. This may involve contacting your child’s Nursery or School for further information or referring to other services such as: Speech and Language Therapists Paediatric Physiotherapists Paediatric Occupational Therapists ALLOW UP TO 1 HOUR FOR YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT We also carry out: Education, Health and Care Assessments (EHCs) Children In Care Assessments Adoption and Fostering work Child Protection Medicals Safeguarding work What may happen after the initial appointment? The Doctor may ask for additional information from other professionals before any recommendations can be made. They will suggest things you can do at home to help your child and decide if your child will benefit from further investigation. What can you do? Parents / carers have a crucial role in their child's development. You can help by continuing to encourage them at home and by liaising with Teachers at their Nursery or School. If you are unable to keep an appointment Please let us know as soon as possible as this will enable us to offer the appointment to another family. What do Community Paediatricians do? Community Paediatricians are doctors experienced in child health who offer high quality services centred on the child and family, city wide for Birmingham. These medical services are provided for both pre- school and school age children and their families and carers. This is usually up to age 16 but, for some children with special needs, may be up to age 19. We see children with: Concerns regarding development. Neurological disability Children with coordination or fine motor difficulties. Behavioural problems Autistic Spectrum Disorder. ADHD Significant learning difficulties/disabilities Sensory Impairment Symptom management in palliative and end of life care.
