1 School Offer The Federation of Newent Schools How does the school identify that children have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? What should I do if I think my child has SEND? How will the school support my child and include me? What provision will my child receive and how will it be monitored? Who are the people involved with SEND at the school? 2 How does the school identify that children have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? As a school we have a variety of ways to identify children as having SEND. These include the following: Talking with previous schools/settings Children performing below age expected levels Concerns raised by you as parents Through termly pupil progress meetings held within school between staff Concerns raised by staff regarding behaviour or self-esteem Talking with other agencies e.g. Health practitioners, Speech Therapists etc. Children’s progress is continually assessed and tracked by the teaching staff and monitored by the school’s leadership team. Class teachers will raise any concerns they may have about a child and this will be discussed with the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo). From there appropriate assessments will be carried out and if necessary and we can begin to put in place support. Back

3 What should I do if I think my child has SEND? Talk to us - Make an appointment with your child’s class teacher Further to this, a meeting with a member of the SEND team You may be guided towards an outside service such as your GP, the Speech Therapy Service or the Behaviour Support Team Back

4 How will the school support my child and include me? All children and young people with SEND are valued, respected and equal members of the school. As such provision for pupils with SEND is a matter for the school as a whole. All teachers are teachers of pupils with SEND. Through advice and support from the SEND team, teachers match the learning to the needs and abilities of the pupils – where appropriate materials will be modified or additional support provided to enable pupils with SEND to access the learning or assessment procedures. All children are including in all parts of the school curriculum and we aim for all children to be included in school trips and we provide the necessary support to ensure this is successful. Targets will be set for pupils with SEND through conversations with them and their parents/carers with the expectations that the child will achieve their target by the time it is reviewed. As parents there may be targets that you can support your child with at home. As a school we will guide you in how best to support your child and provide resources if necessary. Back

5 What provision will my child receive and how will it be monitored? We ensure that the needs of all SEND children are met to the best of the school’s ability with the funds available. Our SEND team will closely monitor all provision and progress of any child requiring additional support. Through discussion between the SEND team and class teachers provision will be matched to the children’s needs this may include: Interventions such as: –Rapid Reading –Rapid Writing –Rapid Maths –Early Literacy Support –Talk Boost Class teacher/ Teaching Assistant support Modified Resources – coloured overlays for reading, larger print worksheets Physical access to the school can be adapted through the use of ramps and lifts through stepped areas The school environment can be adapted for the specific needs of children such as writing slopes, footstools and specialised classroom equipment Children with complex needs may require an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP). This will entail a meeting will all the agencies involved with the child, the allocation of funding to support the child with their needs and the writing of an annually reviewed report. Back

6 Who are the people involved with SEND at the school? Our SEND team consists of: Lin Griffiths – Headteacher Jill Perkins – KS1 SENCo Harry Dixon-Gough – KS2 SENCo Gaea Hill – Inclusion Coordinator Kay Selwyn – Pastoral Lead Gary Bottomley – SEND Governor Teaching Assistants are employed to work with all children with SEND and some are specifically trained to deliver interventions. 7 What are the current support programmes for SEND? Children benefit from: Visual timetables in all classrooms Varied and stimulating curriculum aimed at individual children’s learning Access to pastoral support A range of technology Experiences to enhance their learning Teaching Assistants allocated to every class Children with SEND can access: Additional phonics programmes Catch-up reading and writing In Gloucestershire Children Count Talk Boost Silver Stars (Social and Emotional Support) ELS ( Early Literacy Support) Rapid Writing, Reading, Phonics and Maths Nintendo DS groups for confidence with mental maths Social skills groups Nurture groups Fizzy (physical development programme for gross motor skills) Handwriting and finer motor skills groups Speech and Language groups EAL booster groups Peer mediation and Young Leaders at playtimes Back

8 Which additional services does the school access to support children with SEND? As a school, we work closely with any external agencies that we feel are relevant to individual children’s needs within our school, including: Speech and Language Therapist Educational Psychologist CYPS (Children and Young Person’s Service) – mental health Occupational Therapist GP and paediatricians Advisory Teaching Service Multi-Agency Behaviour Support Families First Targeted Support Team We also work closely with Social Care and Welfare Services. Should your child require any form of involvement without outside agencies then the school will immediately inform you and obtain permission from parents/carers to pursue any kind of professional intervention. 9 How does the school support SEND children with transition? We encourage all new children to visit the school prior to starting. For children with SEND, we would encourage further visits to help with acclimatisation. School and parents may feel the need to arrange several transition meetings to alleviate concerns. Children entering the school in Reception are supported through link meetings between settings. We liaise closely with staff when receiving and transferring children to different schools ensuring all relevant paperwork is passed on and all needs are discussed and understood. If your child has complex needs, then an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) review may be used as a transition meeting between staff at both settings. Back
