2 Motivational theory studies what motivates people to behave in certain ways. The two main areas of research are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation Extrinsic motivation Motivation from outside influences and the environment Intrinsic Motivation Motivation for personal and internal reasons (Eggan.P & Kauchack.D, 2010) 2.

3 Maslow stated that unless a learners deficiency needs are met, they will not move up to the next level and fulfil their Growth needs. Self actualisation Physiological needs; food, sleep, bodily functions Physical and emotional safety Love and belonging, friendships and family relationships Self esteem, feelings of self worth Deficiency needs Growth needs Achievement, Problem Solving, Personal Growth (Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, 2007) 3.

4  Implement breakfast programs  Create a no bullying policy  Encourage and praise effort  Nurture self-esteem According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Students will not learn effectively without their deficiency needs being met first. ( Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs n.d ) 4.

5 Create tasks that are challenging but achievable. Encourage goal setting. Think about what is relevant to YOUR students. What do they value? According to wigfield and Eccles’ expectancy- value theory; students motivation equals how much they expect to succeed, times how much they value that success. The important thing to remember is if either of these values are zero, than motivation will be zero. ( Wigfield. & Eccles. J, 2007) 5.

6 Get students involved in decisions about curriculum Let Students make choices about class activities. Students are more motivated when they feel in control of their learning environment “According to self determination theory, having choices and making decisions are intrinsically motivating, and people aren't content if their needs are satisfied without the opportunity for decision making” (Eggen.P & Kauchack. D,2010) 1

7  In the modern world teachers will need to keep up to date with new technology as it arises.  We are in the age of the digital student and teachers will need to prepare students for the future. Post 2010 the classroom may look a little different. New products like the ‘smart-board’ are likely to become more common.

8 Students today have been raised in an age of technology. They will grow into adults that use technology every day. Take advantage of your students curiosity and interest. Use technology in your classroom.  Computer programs and games can be used to make lessons seem more relevant to today's students.

9 Media: Make a class news show and post to online video blogging sites. History and social studies: Ask students to talk about the technology they use to communicate. Compare this to other cultures and to the past. English: Write an outline for a video game Use educational software and websites to compliment classroom activities.

10 In a classroom you will have students from many different backgrounds. Think about how your students backgrounds and experiences will affect motivation. Pay attention to what the motivators are for each child, and remember what works for one, may not work for all. Think about:  Students home life  cultural background  life experiences  socio-economic background All these things can affect what motivates your students (Eggen. P & Kauchak. D, 2010) 1.
