The Welding/Cutting Torch Objective 25.0 Demonstrate proper procedures for oxyacetylene processes.

The Welding/Cutting Torch mixes gases together and when ignited creates an intense heat capable of melting metal.

The gases used are: oxygen and a fuel source. Common sources of fuels are: Propane, MAPP, and Acetylene.

The most commonly used fuel is acetylene because it is readily available and creates enough heat to perform all welding and cutting jobs.

To have a fire, three things must be present: oxygen, a fuel source and heat. The fire triangle is used to signify that all three of these must be present to have a fire.

TORCH SAFETY

1.Wear safety goggles or a face shield at all times. 2.Store fuel and oxygen cylinders separately. 3.Always keep cylinders upright and chained to prevent falling

4.Do not bump or put pressure on any part of equipment. 5.Check for leaks often with a soap solution. 6.Never use oil or grease on equipment

7.Follow proper safety procedure when lighting the torch. 8.Work only in areas that are free of combustible materials. 9.Always wear gloves when using the torch.

10.Keep caps on cylinders that are not connected. 11.Always point the torch away from the body-lit or unlit. 12.If equipment catch on fire, immediately turn off the tanks

-- 13.Learn to recognize the odors of combustible materials 14.Never hand someone a lit torch. 15.Always shut down the torch, cut off the tanks, and bleed lines when not in use.

Safety Rules for Oxy- Acetylene Workplace Keep work area free of grease, oil, and flammable materials Cool or quench hot metal and extinguish all sparks before leaving

Safety Rules for Oxy- Acetylene Workplace Don’t leave torches or tips or hot metal where someone will pick them up Never carry matches or lighters into any work area

Equipment

Equipment required Oxygen cylinder Acetylene cylinder Pressure regulators

Equipment required Two hoses encased together Welding torch with tips Welding goggles and safety glasses

Equipment required Striker Check valves to prevent flashback

Personal Safety Shirts –keep collar and sleeves buttoned to keep out sparks and remove pockets or tape them shut

Personal Safety Pants –no cuffs and come over shoe tops

Personal Safety Shoes –l–leather, cover entire foot Gloves –L–Leather, never use to pick up metal

Safety Glasses –worn under helmets and goggles

Eye Protection Wear safety glasses at all times Wear welding goggles or a face shield with a lens no. 4-6 –when in doubt start with too dark of a lens and then switch to a lighter one.

Setting up the Torch

1.Make sure all connections are tight and check for leaks. 2.Check and close all torch valves. 3.Open the Oxygen Tank Valve slowly at first then all the way

4.Open the lower Oxygen Torch Valve wide open, and then open the top oxygen 1/3 turn 5.Screw in the Oxygen Regulator Adjusting Screw to reach the desired pressure. 6.Cut off the top Oxygen Torch Valve.

7.Open the Acetylene Tank Valve ¼ of a turn. 8.Open the Acetylene Torch Valve 1/3 turn. 9.Adjust the Acetylene Regulator Screw to the desired pressure. Never exceed 15 psi.

10.Cut off the Acetylene Torch Valve

Lighting the Torch

1.Put on all equipment – gloves, goggles and protective clothing. 2.Open the Acetylene Torch Valve ¼ of a turn 3.Light the torch with a friction lighter

4.Continue to open the Acetylene Torch Valve until you have a loud sounding flame. 5.Slowly turn off the Acetylene Torch Valve until the flame becomes quiet.

6.Slowly open the Oxygen Torch Valve and adjust the flame to reach the three prescribed flames.

Types of Flames Oxidizing –Excess oxygen with no feather, makes hissing sound –least used for anything

Types of Flames Neutral –burns equal amounts of oxygen and acetylene and has a clear edged inner cone –most used

Types of Flames Carburizing –Excess acetylene with an acetylene feather two to three times the length of the inner cone –used some in hardsurfacing, adds carbon to metal

Shut Down Procedures.

1.Cut off the Acetylene Torch Valve. The flame will go out. 2.Cut off the Oxygen Torch Valve 3.Cut off the Acetylene Tank Valve. 4.Cut off the Oxygen Tank Valve.

5.Open the Acetylene Torch valve and bleed the lines. When all gauges are on zero screw out the regulator adjusting screw. Turn off the Acetylene Torch Valve.

6.Open the Oxygen Torch Valve and bleed the line. When all gauges are on zero screw out the regulator adjusting screw. Cut off the Oxygen Torch Valve.

Cleanup Roll up torch hoses Put up gloves and goggles along with striker Sweep hot metal in pile and allow to cool if to hot for trashcan.
