Rehabilitation Counselors Rehabilitation counselors (click to follow link) Rehabilitation counselors Occupational Outlook Handbook Scope of Practice Statement Rehabilitation counseling is a systematic process which assists persons with physical, mental, developmental, cognitive, and emotional disabilities to achieve their personal, career, and independent living goals in the most integrated setting possible through the application of the counseling process. The counseling process involves communication, goal setting, and beneficial growth or change through self-advocacy, psychological, vocational, social, and behavioral interventions.

12. The Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) is a state Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency Focuses on blind and visually impaired Iowans who have ultimate goals of competitive employment. Work with blind and visually impaired youth as they progress through high school and into post-secondary education/training and/or into a competitive job. Assists students in planning for the future and in developing skills of independence, advocacy, and job readiness. The Transition Program also strives to assist teens in obtaining part-time work experience prior to graduation from high school. Provides Independent Living skills training to VR clients as well as to individuals who do not have a competitive employment goal. Library Services are available to all blind and visually impaired Iowans, even if they are not clients. The services include free access to talking (recorded) books and other books and materials in alternative formats.

Iowa Department for The Blind (IDB) Transition Vocational Rehabilitation Services The Iowa Department for the Blind is the state vocational rehabilitation agency responsible for providing services to Iowans who are blind or visually impaired. Its mission is to: “Empower blind Iowans to be gainfully employed and live independently.” Because the Department is funded primarily through state and federal tax dollars, most of the services it offers are provided to eligible Iowans at no cost to them. Students 14 years and up who have significant vision loss. This includes students who have vision loss in combination with other disabilities and individuals who are deaf-blind. As students approach 14 years of age. The Iowa Department for the Blind may meet with students and their families and attend IEP meetings, when invited to assist in the transition planning process. IDB provides a variety of services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired, such as library and vocational rehabilitation. However, an applicant must be determined eligible to access vocational rehabilitation services, including transition programs.

14. Students (as well as adults) with vision loss may need assistance with choosing, finding, or keeping a job in the community. They may also need to learn how to deal with their vision loss efficiently. IDB provides this assistance and training through the following services: Library Services Vocational Rehabilitation Services Counseling and Guidance Transition Planning Job Readiness Training Assistance in Determining Post-secondary Education Options. Career Exploration Work Experience Expanded Learning Opportunities, including weekend retreats and summer programs Rehabilitation / Assistive Technology Blindness Skills Training Orientation and Adjustment Center
