Monday, September 28 th, 2015 Chemical Properties, Acids, Bases, pH

Today’s Targets I can list and describe seven physical properties (#13) I can explain what pH is and identify a material as an acid or base on the pH scale (#14) I can describe the four key chemical properties (#15)

Today’s Agenda Warm-Up (Sort it OUT) Finish Lab Questions Building a new pH scale with cabbage juice! Density Column (Determining Relative Densities) Mass vs. Weight

Warm-Up Sort the properties into two groups (Physical, Chemical)

Lab Questions: Spend 8-minutes reviewing the data and answering the questions with your lab partners. This WILL be collected for a grade, so make this your best work!

Lab Results (Data Analysis) Acids – 7-up, Lemon Juice Bases – Milk of Magnesia, Ammonia, Soap Red Litmus – Great for “indicating” bases Blue Litmus – Great for “indicating” acids Lemon Juice has highest concentration of hydronium (H+) Ions. Qualitative Data

Conclusions: Predictions will vary based on prior knowledge and experiences. The most toxic is the ammonia! A base! The pH of our water was likely slightly below 7.0. Some dissolved acids in solution, potentially from original source (reservoir), as a consequence of the purification process (water treatment facility), or dissolved from the pipes. Let’s make our own scale!
