SKELETAL SYSTEM

 Arthritis  arthr = joint + itis = inflammation  inflammation of joints http://www.thefootandankleclinic.com/images/uploaded/footflatfoot13.jpg  Osteoarthritis  oste/o = bone + arthr = joint + itis = inflammation  most commonly associated with aging  Treatment = rest, heat/cold, anti- inflammatory and steroid medications CONDITIONS OF JOINTS CONT’D

 Rheumatoid Arthritis  rheumat/ = watery flow + oid = resembling;  autoimmune disease where joints becomes swollen, painful, and immobile  Usually occurs with hand and feet first;  More common in women than in men http://www.ayurvedictalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/arthritis-hand.jpg  Treatment = rest, exercise, anti- inflammatory or steroid medications, and possibly surgery to replace damaged joints. CONDITIONS OF JOINTS CONT’D

CONDITIONS OF JOINTS  Arthralgia  Arthr/ = joint + -algia = pain  Pain in a joint  Bursitis  Bursitis http://medicine.ucsd.edu/clinicalmed/Knee-prepatellar-bursitis.jpg http://medicine.ucsd.edu/clinicalmed/Knee-prepatellar-bursitis.jpg  Inflammation of a bursa which is a fluid filled sac around the joint  usually caused by repetitive movements (like typing or golf swing)  Treatment = pain meds, injecting steroids and anesthetics into the joint, rest, removing fluid with a needle/syringe, and physical therapy.

SPINAL COLUMN DISORDERS  Ruptured disk  rupture of the disk that results in pressure on spinal nerve roots  Causes severe pain, muscle spasms, impaired movement, and/or numbness.  Treatment – Pain, muscle relaxants, and anti- inflammatory meds to begin with, may use rest, heat/cold application, and surgery in severe cases. http://www.emedx.com/emedx/diagnosis_information/diagnosis_information_image_files/back_neck_images/lumbar_spine_herniated_disk_saggital.gif

Kyph / o = humpback Kyphosis Kyphosis = condition of humpback in the thoracic spine http://medicine.ucsd.edu/clinicalmed/thorax-kyphosis.JPG Lordosis Lord / o = curve Lordosis = condition of curve (or swayback), found in lower spine http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/LIF/LIF127/3D708006.jpg Scoli / o = crooked, bent http://www.bw.ctw.utwente.nl/research/projects/Scoliosis.doc/Scoliosis-1.gif Scoliosis Scoliosis = condition of bent or crooked CURVATURES OF THE SPINE

Graphic slides coming…….Graphic slides coming……. If you are going to work in healthcare, you will see these types of injuries or illnesses. If you are the queasy type, have your group look at the slide first and then decide if you want to look.

BONE CONDITIONS  Oste /o/ porosis  porosis = condition of pores/spaces  Decrease in bone density and increase in porosity; causes thinning and weakening of bones http://www.soylabs.com/img/osteoporosis.jpg http://www.soylabs.com/img/osteoporosis.jpg  Oste /o/ myel / itis  Oste/o = bone + myel = bone marrow + -itis = inflammation  Inflammation of bone and bone marrow  Treatment – antibiotics www.thachers.org/images/Chronic_osteomyelitis.JPG

TREATMENTS / PROCEDURES  Medications  Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Example – Aspirin, Advil  Used to control pain and inflammation http://content.costco.com/Images/Content/Product/352037L.jpg  Acetaminophen (Tylenol)  Controls pain but does not reduce inflammation. Easier on stomach and does not thin blood like NSAIDS. http://www.asdk12.org/staff/johansen_annette/pages/Website%20Pics/tylenol_gelcaps.jpg

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES  These are some of the career opportunities relating to the skeletal system:  Emergency Medical Technician  Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – respond to emergencies and can apply temporary splints  Paramedic  Paramedic (EMT-P) – an EMT with additional training, can give some medications (ex - pain relief)  Physical Therapist  Physical Therapist – provides rehabilitation services to promote healing and return to function following an injury or illness.  Orthopedic Surgeon  Orthopedic Surgeon – provides surgical and non- surgical treatment of broken bones/joints.
