1 Characteristics of Living Things

2 How do you know if something is living?
Have cells Heart beat Reproduce Breaths Consumes water or sugars (eat) Grows Moves Eat Sleep Digest Changes (is born and dies) Develops Adapts Evolves Stuffed animole Plant Thread Magnet Beaver log Turtle shell Killer whale (Jeffrey) Orange fluid Bean Butterfly globe Fish net Worm Slinky Plastic frog

3 How do you know if something is living?
It grows Reproduces Breaths Use photosynthesis Has a heart Evolves Consumes things Produces things Can talk Makes noise Moves Blood Has cells Scientifically proven/accepted that its alive Can die Turtle shell Bean Yarn Plastic frog Butterfly dome Stuffed animole Plant Stuffed whale Beaver wood Slinky Orange fluid (rheioscopic fluid) Magnet Worm

4 How do you know if something is living?
Breath Cells Reproduce Get rid of waste Food (way to get food) Movement Skin /external cover Senses Bones Plastic frog Butterfly Dome Earth worm Orange fluid String Slinky Magnets Whale (beanie baby) Bean Turtle shell Beaver log Plant Smoked almonds Stuffed animole

5 What is biology? Who studies biology?
Biologists = individuals that study living things.

6 How do you know if something is living?

7 5 Major Characteristics of Life
Organization Reproduction Growth and Development Metabolism Adaptation

8 Organization How is your body organized?
Do the parts of living organisms mean anything? What do they do? What are they made of?

9 Organization Living things have specialized parts that perform specific functions These parts are composed of cells

10

11 Organization Cell = the basic unit of life
An object cannot be living unless it is composed of one or more cells! Unicellular = living things composed of ONE cell Multicellular = living things composed of more than one cell

12 Is this organism unicellular or multicellular?

13 Is this organism unicellular or multicellular?

14 Is this organism unicellular or multicellular?

15 Reproduction Why do living things need to reproduce?
Reproduction= making more of an organisms Essential to the continuation of a species Species = a group of similar organisms that are able to interbreed AND produce fertile offspring

16 Is a mule a species?

17 …what about a Liger?

18 Species v. Hybrids Species = organism that can interbreed AND reproduce with fertile offspring Examples: Lion Tiger Horse Donkey Hybrid = organism produced by interbreeding of two different species that is infertile Examples: Liger Mule Zonkey

19 Growth and Development
How have you changed since birth? Do other organisms change after birth? How do growth and development differ?

20 Growth Growth = increasing the amount of living material
Getting bigger by adding more cells

21 Development Development = formation of physically different structures

22 How do organisms get energy?
Organisms must “eat” something What an organism eats and how it uses that energy is called a metabolic pathway Metabolism = using energy from food to carry out cellular processes (foodenergy)

23 What do you think each of these organisms use for food?

24 Adaptation Why do organisms need to adapt?
What causes them to adjust to their surroundings?

25 Adaptation Stimuli = changes in an organisms’ environment that cause a response Response = reaction to a stimulus

26 Adaptation and Homeostasis
Adjusting helps maintain homeostasis Homeostasis = maintaining internal balance in a changing environment

27 Cells Maintain Homeostasis too!

28 Create a Concept Map that organizes the 5 characteristics of living things AND uses these terms…
Cell Specialized parts/functions Unicellular Multicellular Species Hybrid Grow(th) Development Metabolism Stimuli Response Homeostasis
