1 -to understand why birth rates may change -to understand why death rates may change Why do population densities change around the world? Starter; -why may birth rates fall? -spider diagram your reasons why. -explain as many as you can!

2 Homework! Homework; “What do you consider to be the most important factor in controlling rapidly increasing populations?” Justify your answer. Top answers will briefly refer to different countries as examples to back up your arguments. Word limit: 2 sides of A4. Previous Homework; Did any of you find an article relating to population or Geography? Explain it to us!

3 Why is population data important? Why might we want to use this data? To allow government to allocate resources effectively So that governments can try to predict future pop’n trends ….and so they then can try to manage any issues arising from this! To plan for housing, transport, hospital etc demands Can be linked to credit card data or loyalty card data to build up habit profiles of areas and regions Enables targeted marketing and advertising Retailers can plan more effectively where to build stores Insurance industry can use it to assess risk or ‘blacklist’ certain areas Retailers can use it to match stock to buyers likely profile i.e. premium goods in wealthy areas

4 Using page 147-9 of AQA AS Geography (or photocopies), construct a mind map of the various factors affecting fertility rates around the world on A3. Include key facts and examples as well as explanative information!

5 How can you use this in an exam or essay? When discussing case studies or reasons why countries have had to deal with fertility rates (either being to high or to low), use these basic factors to frame your answer! i.e. “Education is a big factor in influencing and changing a populations fertility rate. The education of females allows them to gain knowledge about birth control…..Without education women often cannot take control of their own family planning and birth control. This is very evident in India where…..”
