2 PERU Background/Brief History: Ancient Peru consisted of several Andean civilizations like the Incan Empire. The Incan empire was invaded, captured and colonized by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821. Peru finally returned to democratic leadership in 1980. Culture is a blend of Incan and Spanish influence. ©2012, TESCCC

3 Argentina Background/Brief History: In 1816, the United Provinces of the Rio Plata declared independence from Spain. After Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay left the area, what remained became Argentina. The country's people and culture were shaped by immigrants from Europe, but most especially Italy and Spain. 4 Brazil Background/Brief History: Brazil gained its independence from Portugal in1822. During this time they were under a monarchy until slavery was abolished in 1888. In 1889, the country became a republic. Brazilian coffee exporters, politically dominated the country until 1930. Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America. Brazil was controlled by military groups until 1985 when they finally gave power to civilian rulers. ©2012, TESCCC
