2 Questioning Strategies for Whole-class Interactive Teaching
Based on Geoff Petty’s workshop at HCC and his books: Teaching Today and Evidence-Based Teaching

3 Questioning What questioning strategies do you use in class?
What do you recall from previous training on questions? What do you remember about how you were questioned at school? How effective do you think different strategies are?

4 Why questioning? All teachers use questioning skills as part of their standard tool kits. Research evidence (See Hattie and Marzano) tells us that good questioning strategies can have a huge effect on student achievement. Good strategies really support and help students who may be struggling with LLN, especially as they are often used in the presentation stage of lessons. Therefore we need to provide an approach to Q&A which includes more students and excludes fewer.

5 Today’s session Look at different questioning strategies
Evaluate them from different points of view (Petty’s spectacles ) Apply this knowledge to your curriculum area and plan how, when and why you are going to integrate them into your teaching practice

6 Petty’s 7 questioning Strategies
Q&A: volunteers answer Q&A: nominees answer Buzz groups: volunteers answer Buzz groups: nominees answer Assertive questioning Pair checking Mini whiteboards

7 Which ones do you usually use?
Complete the final column on the worksheet.  I use this questioning strategy a lot I sometimes use this strategy  I never use this strategy Q&A: volunteers answer Q&A: nominees answer Buzz groups: volunteers answer Buzz groups: nominees answer Assertive questioning Pair checking Mini whiteboards

9 What does this tell you? Questioning using ..

10 Task Work in groups of 3/4 Create a diagram (mind map?) showing how you could apply one of the questioning strategies in your curriculum area. Your facilitator will tell you which one to do. Leave your diagrams on your desk, and go and look at what others have done.

11 Key Points All use Q&A in whole class interactive teaching, but some strategies are more effective than others Methods with the largest impact on learning: allow all students thinking time – not only the quickest Encourage students to self- and peer-correct Provide good feedback to the students and the teacher

12 What are you going to do? I am going to use assertive questioning in my next interrogation, I mean lesson, and make them sweat! Tell your partner which of the strategies you are going to use more of as a result of this workshop.
