Welcome to Year 1: Marjoram, Basil and Lavender

Adults in our classrooms. Year 1 team will be Mrs Tallamy, Mrs Gartland, Mrs Battison, Mrs Stanton, Mrs Aindow Mrs Love, Mrs Rowe and Miss Woolfries. Mrs Collins, Mrs Heber and Miss Woodward will be in on a Wednesday morning.

Class routines Numbered reading books can be changed by the children every day. Just pop them in the box as you come in to class if you have read at home. On a Monday phonic reading books will be changed. Library books will be changed every other week. Maths games will be changed every 3 weeks. P.E – children need to have P.E kits in school everyday but it will usually be on a Monday or a Friday. Morning routines – please help your child to self register, put their things away and hand in their reading book.

Topic ‘What keeps us up and about?’ Our topic this term is all about the body. Fascinating facts! The children love finding out unusual facts about bodies. Please help them to share anything they find out at home. *If you know anyone who is in the medical profession and would like to come in and share their knowledge with the children, please speak to one of the team :o)

Phonics Phonic and key word home learning. Please encourage your child to practise the sounds and letters they are learning about. This information will shortly be sent home in a book. Phonics in school. Children will continue to be taught phonics in groups and are encouraged to use this as the key strategy when reading and spelling. The English section of our website has some useful information, including how to make the sounds accurately. Key words (or sight words). They will run alongside phonics. The children will have a mat with words they need to learn to read by sight and then eventually to spell. If anyone has any questions about phonics, please come and see one of the team :o)

Reading Numbered books can be changed by your child when they are ready to have a new book. Please sign their journals to say they have read with you at home. If you feel they need assessing again please speak to one of the team. On a Monday phonic reading books will be changed. Please place in the basket. Phonics home learning will be given out on a Friday and due back by the next Friday. Guided reading will happen in school. This is when a teacher shares a text with a small group of children. Individual readers – ERIC the elephant. ‘Everyone reading in class’ is a time every day after lunch when the children have the chance to enjoy reading or listening to a story. There is a reading workshop on 29 th September please feel free to come along.

Maths (for more info see topic web ) To support your child in Year One, please reinforce the numbers to at least 20 in fun ways at home. We will be aiming for them to count to 100 and back. They will also be learning to count objects accurately and form numbers correctly. It would be really helpful if you can talk to your child about the date each day too. KIRFS (Key instant recall facts) There will be one of these each term on the Year 1 pages of our website. Maths games will be changed every 3 weeks. Please play the game at home and talk to your child about it.

Writing We will be teaching all children to develop the tripod pencil grip to support handwriting. At Trinity we use a cursive script as research has shown it enables a more fluent style and improves spelling. By the end of Year One, children will be expected to write several sentences independently. Phonics and spelling is key to successful writing. Please encourage your child to only use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, a name or a place. Writing tends to be a more challenging skill to master than reading and maths for children, so any writing you can do with your child at home is invaluable.

Share books Share books are one of our forms of communication. We will look at them everyday and so feel free to add any notes to the messages section. Please complete the purple pages. There are medical pages and a home school agreement that need to be signed. Parents/ Carers need to sign the share book each week. The children will complete their section in school. Adults in school will either write a comment or give information about the week.

Parent helpers If you would like to help regularly in school with maths games or books or even reading with the children, please let us know. If you have a skill or something you would like to share with the children please see one of the team :o)
