DMV Guidance Click here to go to DMV policy If you fail the exam: Under age 18, by law you must wait a full 15 days before you can retake the exam. For example, if you fail the test on January 1, the earliest you would be eligible to take the test again is January 17. Age 18 or older, you must pay a $2.00 re-examination fee if you retake the exam within 15 days. Regardless of age, if you fail the two-part knowledge exam three times at a CSC, you must complete the classroom portion of a Virginia approved Driver Training School program and present the Driver Education Certificate at a customer service center with a completion date after the date of the third exam failure to be eligible for re- examination. Re-examination requirements for home-schooled students can be found in Home-Schooled Re-Examination Requirements Information Sheet (HS 4).Driver Training Schoolcustomer service centerHS 4

Accommodations Can request from DMV o Pen and Paper o Have test read by DMV staff o Computer reads the test questions o Do you know of others ??? o raise your hand o type in the question box

Counselor Suggestions: Study the Learner’s permit book available free from the DMV. Do not use the online testing site as those test give a false sense of “I know this”. ◦ Do not recommend the general knowledge questions. They are too easy and do not give a true sense of the questions that the student will encounter on the general knowledge test. Use the sign part of the test site, very helpful Must study ALL the learner’s permit booklet, including: motorcycle, alcohol, and a special “stopping” section

Tools Created Jeopardy Game (Donna Martin) Practice Tests (Stephanie Brown) Flash Cards (Lisa Salyer) Comic Book (Donna Martin/Vickie Reeves) Hollywood Squares (Donna Martin) UNO (Lisa Salyer)

Methods from Around the State Halifax Sheri Newbill uses the schools drivers ed program ◦ If student needs individual instruction due to disability DRS pays ◦ Floyd County ◦ Karol Treadway helped a student connect to a driving school in Christiansburg for training, Christiansburg Driving School paid by DRS Lee County 2 school staff members became vendors to provide learner’s permit tutoring before or after school. ◦ will meet with the student to assess what level of help the student needs ◦ will start with 4 sessions at a rate of $25 per hour and understand that a student may need 10 sessions to be competent with the material. ◦ provide services about 2-4 weeks prior to scheduling of the test so that material is fresh. Chesterfield Betsy Elwood - 1 day/wk for 8 weeks, offered several times a yr ◦ School also recommends the local CIL for learner’s permit classes Henrico ◦ Kathy Major - uses the Richmond CIL for driver’s permit prep classes in Henrico. Norton ◦ Melissa Woods-Clark – only one licensed provider in their area for Learner’s permit or Behind the Wheel. ◦ DRS will sponsor if service isn’t completed at school before graduation.

Martinsville – Donna Martin We provide the learner’s permit tutoring pretty differently depending on how we are approached. When this is appropriate we will meet at the school during a class that allows us to pull the student out for about 30 minutes. ◦ Usually it’s a resource class. ◦ We’ll go over practice tests, use the computer to show them the test and one of our interns developed a jeopardy game I will send you. ◦ We use a LOT of flash cards as well. ◦ When we do some group work with classes we’ll incorporate the learner’s permit portion into the class. ◦ Hollywood squares style is our favorite because we give them the question and answer and ask them if they agree etc. They decide as a team so the kids aren’t singled out. ◦ For students during the summer right now Vicki is reaching out and bringing them in here to office to meet with her. Both our recent interns were young and loved doing the driving so we had a lot of involvement from them in getting the students interested in this goal. ◦ Once they are ready for test we will schedule an appt with our contact at the DMV who will take them in the back and read a paper test to them if that’s what is best.
