Darnell Boyle REHABILITATION

Not enough is done on rehabilitation Reoffending rates are way too high considering the expense of the prison system, and rehabilitation is not the only aspect of general prison failures. A prime example of the prison failings is Oakwood prison. Oakwood is a failure for £150 million worth…Full scale riots are the usual in the prison, drugs are imported and alcohol is brewed within the walls.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE? An improvement needs to be made in rehabilitation within prison. Courses should be offered which teach inmates valuable life skills of which they can convert when they eventually leave. Courses such as literacy, basic mathematics, child care and basic living skills. Literacy courses will allow inmates to be more punctual and less illiterate. Child care will allow inmates to become better fathers, as most inmates have children of whom they do not support. Basic living skills such as cooking and cleaning will allow them to live life's with much more ease and being less dependent of others. Schemes such as Story Book Dads where inmates record stories for their children to hear on the outside have been incredibly successful – but not nearly enough exist

People with shorter sentences are more likely to reoffend. This shows most criminals would rather be in prison than out. Or does it? People serving longer sentences are more likely to be older when the get out of prison, so does this simply show that older people are less likely to reoffend? What is prison for if people simply reoffend when they get out?

The government has introduced a plan to invest £1bn on new prisons. If the government has to spend a billion on prisons it only shows the prisons that are currently in use are inadequate and insufficient in providing rehabilitation. 7 CONCLUSION My overall point is that prison does not work in its current format. We need to make sure that all prisoners can access quality rehabilitation programmes to reduce recidivism
